Godzilla
and Rodan become the good guys (bad news for adaults, great news for kids like me!). Reccomended!
The Best (Showa) Godzilla Film Since The Original Unedited Masterpiece
I am one of the few people -let alone kids- to have actually seen the original unedited GOJIRA before its initial release on DVD. Granted, I only saw half of it, but I indeed watched it at the Old Town Theater, and from what I saw of it, it was the best
Godzilla
film ever. Due to GOJIRA's success in the year of its release, Toho decided to make more films starring Big G. However, these sequals, GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN, KING KONG VS. GODZILLA, and MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA, all missed the mark. The original's briliance could never be matched.
But then came this film. They decided to make Godzilla a hero, which in my opinion was a good decision, for reasons other than that I'm a kid. ;-) And it actually works here, unlike certain later films.
This was also the first kaiju movie to have a large
monster
brawl, featuring Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra up against King Ghidorah, In a great climax that was just a taste of what was to come.
In my opinion, Godzilla is purely Japanese. He wouldn't have worked in America. I believe that Godzilla's changes were mirroring Japan's. At the time this movie was made, Japan was still recovering slightly from the Atom Bomb, but was getting brighter, friendlier, and more upbeat, and would continue to become so. In this movie, Godzilla starts out slightly destructive, but by the film's end he is brighter, friendlier, and more upbeat, and he would continue to become such in later entries. For instance, compare GOJIRA to this movie, and finally compare it to Godzilla vs. Megalon (which I admit I do enjoy, despite popular opinion). And then, as Japan grew more serious again, so did the Godzilla series, via the Heisei and Millenium series.
King Ghidorah himself is done very well, his best Showa movie. Rodan, though he doesn't look quite as good as in his solo premiere movie, still looks like his, cute, beautiful, and majestic self, which is good. Mothra Larva is cute as always, which is also good. As for the human side of things, the plot is pretty good, and much better than some later entries.
However, the movie is not without its flaws. Godzilla's atomic fire looks great when he first uses it, but after that it looks like steam! Also, the plane's explosion towards the beginning looks very fake. But these are just minor flaws in an excellent movie. This is a turning point in the G series, and without this a lot of great future G movies probably wouldn't have been made! This is an underrated gem that should not be overlooked!
