A half mile up the sunlit walls of Yosemite, a rope breaks, a young woman plunges to her death, and the rescue from hell begins.

Thirty-five years ago, Hugh Glass found glory on El Cap, and met the woman he would marry and lose. Now he's back to climb the wall again, and make a fresh start. But when disaster strikes a team of women high above, Hugh finds himself drawn into a dead vertical race against time. Plagued by fire, ice, and old demons, he reaches the wreckage of the fall, where the rescuers become the victims. Caught between the golden summit and terminal velocity, they cannot retreat, but may not survive the harrowing mystery of the wall.

Couldn't put it down.........

The Wall was my 3rd Jeff Long novel and I rate it in the top 10 books I've ever read. My wife knew this was a "good one" as I'd disappeared into my "extreme reading mode" from the time I opened this book. Jeff's prose sometimes takes a little getting used to but once you're hooked, well.... you're just hooked and you expect the same prose in his other work - which he delivers without disappointment. My armpits are still sweating from reading this one.............

Always a pleasure to read Jeff Long

I began reading Jeff Long's work years ago beginning with The Ascent. Every book since then has been a true pleasure to read. As a climber/outdoorsman I appreciate the insight and the gritty reality that only someone who practices what they preach can bring to their storytelling. The Wall kept me reading into the wee hours with nervous anticipation. It did not disappoint.

Quite a surprise ending!

If you have not read anything by Jeff Long before, you're in for a real treat. As you may guess from the title, the story centers around the scaling of a cliff-face ("the wall"). The writing is excellent, and the story is offbeat enough to keep your attention glued, and the twists and turns give some quite pleasant surprises! I doubt anyone will not be surprised by the ending. A very good read!

Small Scope compared to other Long Novels

I'm a huge fan of Jeff Long, having read Descent, Deeper, Year Zero and The Reckoning before The Wall, and I have to (yet hate to) say that this is my least favorite of the bunch. It's very heavy on the character side, which some people love, but I like big action and lots of it. The wall certainly has some, just not enough for me to call this a page-turner. That said, the characters we quite vivid...but they are in his bigger, more action oriented novels as well. This is really just a small story in comparison to Descent, Deeper and Year Zero. Even the Reckoning.

And I have to say the ending, while kind of cool, ultimately bothered me. It's essentially the same ending as Reckoning, just on a smaller scale. I won't say what that is and ruin two novels at once, but its the same deal. Also, I really don't enjoy stories that...(potential spoiler) have you routing for a hero the whole way through, only to turn the guy bad in the last pages. It feels like I've been duped and it ruins the story for me. Had this not happened I probably would have appreciated all that character development more. As it is, it's all be big ruse. So I was a little disappointed in the book. It's still a good read, though and the writing is great. The pace and ending just didn't do it for me.
