Whether it is chosen or thrust upon you, change brings both opportunities and turmoil. Since first published 25 years ago, Transitions has helped hundreds of thousands of readers cope with these issues by providing an elegantly simple yet profoundly insightful roadmap of the transition process. With the understanding born of both personal and professional experience, William Bridges takes readers step by step through the three stages of any transition: The Ending, The Neutral Zone, and, in time, The New Beginning. Bridges explains how each stage can be understood and embraced, leading to meaningful and productive movement into a hopeful future. With a new introduction highlighting how the advice in the book continues to apply and is perhaps even more relevant today, and a new chapter devoted to change in the workplace, Transitions will remain the essential guide for coping with the one constant in life: change.

How to Identify the Patterns in Life Transition?

The depth of the book is that it is not a manual on "how to cope", but gets us to see that the process of disorganisation, death and renewal is fundamental to nature and a central theme in mythology. The moral is: Focus less on whether an event is good or bad, but whether or not it involves an important change of life for you. And don't be worried if the event seems relatively inconsequential; it may be merely the most obvious symbol of change, when there are deeper rumblings in the psychological ground beneath. Transitions happen throughout our lives and don't necessarily correspond to a set age. Following is a rough outline of Bridge's 3 stages of transition: (1). To have a new beginning you need to acknowledge an ending; (2). The point is to pay attention to your changes and thoughts and (3). Be easy on yourself and maintain at least some form of continuity with your old life. Fresh with your insights from limbo time. The authorv summarizes his book by quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Not in his goals but in his transitions man is great".

A book to share with others

I have read this book several times and I am amazed how neither the text or the power of Bridge's insights lose their meaning. In fact, I have purchased multiple copies of the book and keep them handy to give to friends who are going through difficult times in their lives.

I find comfort in the deeper meaning of the work. How transitions sometimes occur with or without our knowledge or consent. How something inside us (perceptions, ideas, values) or outside (job or person loss) must come to an end in some small or major triggering event in order for transition to occur and move us to another emotional or physical place.

If I had to be on a deserted island, this would be one of the books I'd want with me. It gives me hope.

Shed light on my transition experience

The copy of this book I have was first published in 1980. But no matter, because the principles Bridges lays out are so amazingly timeless. The insights he shares are so penetrating, so profound, and so moving. I have assumed that life stages just march on in clockwork fashion. No one ever told me that even welcomed changes like becoming an Empty Nester would wreak such havoc within me. Bridges described a lot of the experiences I have had and am still having. Most importantly, he gives me the vocabulary to begin to talk about these transitions.
Bridges is a master of words. His prose just flows like poetry. His gentleness and compassion shine through his writing as well.

change is certain

I had to read this book for school so that we can write about our own transition. At first I did not understand the point in that, but after reading the book, seeing Bridges' steps and relating it to a big transition in my life, I was able to let go of a lot of issues I had with that transition and really understand what took place and more importantly, why it happened the way it did. I would recommend this to anyone going through a major (or minor) life change to get an insight to what and why the change is the way it is. I can understand life a lot better now thanks to this book.

Some wonderful information, but in a cloudy form

I found this book to be very helpful and insightful, but overly long and ponderous. Others may appreciate Bridges' style more than I, but I found myself frustrated by lots of repetition (Did you know that ancient and traditional cultures have rites of passage that mark transitions?), and wishing that it had been through some more thoughtful editing to clear away about one-third of the work, parts that more muddy the picture than sharpen or brighten it. Some great content, just too much extraneous and repetitious text.
