From the moment you pick it up, you'll know it's a classic. The MacArthur Study Bible is perfect for serious study.

Dr. John MacArthur has collected his pastoral and scholarly work of more than 35 years to create the most comprehensive study Bible available. No other study Bible does such a thorough job of explaining the historical context, unfolding the meaning of the text, and making it practical for your life.

I Love this Study Bible

I have enjoyed listening to John MacArthur's radio broadcasts for the past 20 or so years and so I was already familiar with the MacArthur name. And I really enjoy the NASB version of the Bible and so when I heard about this study Bible decided to buy a copy of it. My church bookstore does have this item available so could have purchased it there but decided to order through Amazon & I'm glad I did. Its easy for me to follow along and the footnotes are good too.

Terrific NASB Study Bible

The MacArthur Study Bible in NASB is all that I had hoped it would be. The black leather cover has a good feel and I can open to any page and it will lay open. The text is large enough for a comfortable read. MacArthur provides excellent introductions to each book of the Bible (combining introductions for books such as 1st and 2nd Samuel, Kings, etc.) with author information, background, history, and interpretive challenges. An outline for each book is also provided. The key to this Bible are the extensive notes that are presented on every page, explaining critical points, giving historical or cultural insights, defining terms and locations, and connecting the passage to other Scripture.

Good Study Bible

Very good study Bible. McCarthur is very diligent in studying the Bible and all types of resources surrounding it such as history, Greek, Hebrew, other Christian works, secular works, etc. Not a big fan of NASB or NKJV of the Bible, though many prefer them. In some cases the reading is more difficult. For example (NASB then KJV) magi-wise men, dissipation-riot, sordid-filthy, diadems-crowns. Obviously there are examples where the opposite is true also. Another place to look at some NASB changes is hissheep.org. A good, understandable KJV non-study Bible is the Defined King James Bible by Bibles for Today. Hardcovers are reasonably priced. Anyway the McCarthur Bible is a good and informative study Bible.

Yes and No...

Evangelicals need to be ever vigilant about which Bible version they choose as more and more gender-neutral and "dynamic" Bible translations are being hyped as more relevant to modern readers. This is being driven not only by liberal theologies but also by publishing houses that place more value on profit than promoting accurate versions of God's Word. The updated NASB version is highly recommended as the most literal and accurate Bible translation available today.

The NASB study Bibles offer expanded tables, outlines, introductions, etc. that can give the serious or aspiring student of the Word added and insights into the meaning of the text. Along with many other helps, there are also of special note: a Synopsis of Bible Doctrine, a Topical Index, a Concordance, and many Maps & Timelines. While these helps are not intended as stand-alone references, they are useful for devotions, in the pew, and for any time you don't have access to your reference library.

I posted this review in particular because there is an increasing number of study Bibles out there, and the amount of choices can be daunting to the average Christian. If it were just a matter of picking one of the trusted translations, it wouldn't be so much of a problem, but it seems that everyone wants to put their name on a study Bible these days. Study Bibles can be a great help in many situations, but the wrong one could do more harm than good.

I have been using Ryrie's version of the NASB Study Bible; Ryrie Study Bible NAS Hardback- Red Letter (Ryrie Study Bibles) for about 25 years and I have yet to find anything better. The major strength of Dr. Ryrie's study notes is that they follow a single, normative method of interpretation for the whole of Scripture. You won't find him citing men, church traditions, and catechisms as proofs, only the plainly written Word within its context.

Since many evangelicals I've talked to are unaware of the problems with the MacArthur NASB study Bibles, Biblicists should avoid it in any version. Although MacArthur claims to be a "leaky" dispensationalist, he abandons a consistent normative interpretation to accommodate his Calvinism and in promoting Lordship Salvation. His study notes reflect this.

Another possible alternative to Ryrie would be the NASB Scofield Study Bible III; The Scofield Study Bible III: New American Standard Bible. I have yet to take an in-depth look at the much-hyped ESV version, and still need to do more research in how they render some critical verses as it has many Calvinist/Reformed backers.
