It has been three years since the wars against Arminius and the Cherusci. Gaius Silius, Legate of the Twentieth Legion, is concerned that the barbarians-though shattered by the war-may be stirring once again. He also seeks to confirm the rumors regarding Arminius' death. What Silius does not realize is that there is a new threat to the Empire, but it does not come from beyond the frontier; it is coming from within, where a disenchanted nobleman looks to sow the seeds of rebellion in Gaul.

Legionary Artorius has greatly matured during his five years in the legions. He has become stronger in mind; his body growing even more powerful. Like the rest of the Legion, he is unaware of the shadow growing well within the Empire's borders, where a disaffected nobleman seeks to betray the Emperor Tiberius. A shadow looms; one that looks to envelope the province of Gaul as well as the Rhine legions. The year is A.D. 20.

Soldier of Rome: The Sacrovir Revolt: A Novel of the Twentieth Legion During the Rebellion of Sacrovir and Florus

I loved It. Simply Brilliant. Better than the first one, and I really liked the first one. I highly recommend this one and the first one.

An Elder HighBorn: Latronii Domanaruses: Gens Latronia"

Great read for the off season!

As the Roman re-enactment season takes its usual summer pause (who wants to wear iron when it is 90 degrees?) take a moment to read James mace's second book, the Sacrovir Revolt. Taking a little used event in Roman novels, James improves his style and presentation to tell a good story. Character development has improved and gotten deeper. The Romans are good guys... but one has to imagine that it took Good soldiers to keep the Empire functioning. As James matures as an author he is getting better and better at making Artorious and his crew come to life as one of the solid groups of career soldiers that strike when they must, follow up when they have to, but display a conscience as well, something sometimes missing in historic works where thousands are slaughtered. Good men are soldiers too! In any event, the work is a great way to spend a weekend when you could be re-enacting... but can't!!

roman fiction

for anyone who likes to read about the roman legions, their wars, and ways of life this is a very good and interesting book that will keep you entertained.

Perfect Killing Machines

I like Mr. Mace's books about the roman legions I have been very entertained but as in the case of the first book I still believe the characters are two unidimensional. Artorius is an idealization of a good soldier, tough, smart, devoted, good leader, not a single fault in this man, he should have some kind of flaw to make him more interesting. The same can be said about the centurions Macro, Vitruvius, the Primus Pilus, too good to be true, too honest, too hard working, can't believe that among the men of the 20th Legion there are not cowards, shirkers, thiefs, rapists, political ambition, no intrigue at all inside the Legion which is hard to believe as the Romans were political animals in essence. Even the enemies have nobility, Florus and Sacrovir start as ambitious and rapine bent unscrupulous and conniving men and end up as the personification of patriots. Were lay the writer's symphaties, everybody is good in the end, everybody dies a noble death no real villains in the story. Not a single flaw in Tiberius which was considered in history as a cold blooded tyrant, and in later years as a sadist and pederast, here we are presented with an ideal ruler tough but fair. There is only a hint of darkness in the portrayal of Aelius Sejanus which is considered one of the villains in history. The author should also consider the darker side of the human spirit, usually the darker motivations drive ambition, success, especially in the army. There is not a single hint of psychological damage in this soldiers who massacre enemies, torture them, crucify them but yet are not capable of other crimes considered even normal in roman armies such as rape and plunder and after the action is over they return to their normal duty without remorse, without strained relations, no heavy alcoholism, drogadiction, allienation in these men, they are the perfect personification of military killing machines killing without remorse, butchering without passion, obeying orders. In the following books in the series it could be commendable to try to convey a more humane approach to this characters after so much blood and guts even Artorius has to have some darkness inside himself after all he is supposed to be only human.
