No one rides-or reads-like the
Trailsman
. Scouting for soldiers in hostile territory, Skye Fargo-with the aid of an ornery mountain man and his wildcat daughter-must keep his charges safe from not only Indians, but a murderer among them.
"He'd kill anyone at the drop of a hat,and drop the hat himself."
It looked like Skye Fargo had a pretty routine job ahead of him in being the scout leading Captain Preston and about 20 fairly inexperienced soldiers to Fort Laramie after scouting some new fort replacements.
Things start turning bad when people get killed and they are at a loss to find who the killer or killers are.
Something that is very unusual for an Old West Western arises when rather than Indians or Outlaws ,it turns out that a psychotic killer is involved. This killer, wrecks death and destruction for no other reason than the thrill he gets from killing. His victims can be man, woman or beast,it is all the same to him.
It takes a while to find out who the killer is; but even when he is known and he knows The
Trailsman
is on to him;his killing continues unabated without any fear of Skye Fargo or anyone else.
We are used to seeing parts played by Doves;butwait till you see the part a little kitten plays in this saga. The killer takes out his victims one by one ,at will, and it appears Fargo might meet his better with this challenge. Fargo has been up against some pretty bad odds;but this time it looks hopeless.
One of the best episodes in this long running and always action-packed series.

Filled to the brim with action
Skye Fargo is leading a column of raw Army recruits through the northern Rockies to scout out new fort placements when he discovers Indian tracks that are too close for comfort. But there's something more dangerous than warrior braves after them, it's a murderer already amoung them.
The
Trailsman
books are known for being action packed and this one is filled almost to the brim. For fans of fast paced reading that moves from one violent confrontation to another as quickly as you can draw a breath then this can't fail to hit all the right spots.
Jon Sharpe combines a number of fascinating characters, such as Mountain Joe and Prissy, - and who here can forget Matilda the mule - Sergeant Macon and the killer.
Using a serial killer makes for a different kind of main protagonist for this series and allows for a high death toll, probably the highest number of killings in the Trailsman books for a long time. Perhaps even the most Jon Sharpe has written into a book too for a while?
And, for a Trailsman book, much less sex, which made for a better read for me, a trend I'm hoping will continue.
For those who like action packed westerns this is a must read!
