Josh Swensen is not your average 17-year-old. At the age of two, he was figuring out algebraic equations with colored magnetic numbers. He is a prodigy who only wants to make the world a better place. Josh?s wish comes true when his virtual alter ego, Larry, becomes a huge media sensation. Larry has his own Web site where he posts sermons on anti-consumerism and has a large following of adults and teens. Meanwhile, Larry?s identity is a mystery to everyone. While it seems as if the whole world is trying to figure out Larry?s true identity, Josh feels trapped inside his own creation. What will happen to the world, and to Larry, if he is exposed?

Josh is a bored seventeen-year-old genius. That is just a recipe for disaster!

Just for something to do, he creates a website where he posts all of his rants about our celebrity-obsessed culture, anti-communism, and any other random thing that he thinks of. Josh names his site "The Gospel According To Larry" because that is the most unreligious name he could possibly think of. He's getting two or three hits a day, until some kids from his school find the page and he's soon getting a few hundred visitors a day to his website.

Then Bono, the lead singer of U2, finds Josh's site. And he mentions the site on national television.

Josh instantly begins getting millions of hits a day and everyone wants to know who Larry is.

Then betagold, a fan of Larry's, begins leaving comments on Josh's site about how he should just come out and tell everyone who Larry really is.

As things begin to spin out of control, Josh goes crazy! What will he do to save himself? Will he ever reveal that he's "Larry"?

This is a really funny book, because I can totally imagine something like this actually happening! Sometimes the middle is a little slow, but overall the book is a really great read!

The Audiobook rocked!

I only post a review when a book or a movie makes such an impression I just have to! This is going in everybody's stocking this year. I am giving the audio version of the book to all 7 significant people in my life including my 17 year old son. What an impression this book has made on me! After listening to the book I felt so inspired I cleaned out an entire bookshelf of books I probably would never read, or never read again. I got rid of movies that had been gathering dust on the shelves.. I've been an avid collector for years but the fact of the matter is that I'd buy it and watch it once and then let it sit in the entertainment center with the rest of the 200 or so movies I've collected over the years.. of those about 55 have actually been watched more than once.. those got to stay. While I can't say I am able to live as modestly as this character it certainly got me thinking about what I will choose to bring into my life from here on out. I recommend this to everyone.. give it a listen it's charming, thought provoking and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A Book All Teens Should Read

Look through the eyes of a teenager, Josh Swenson, in this fictional story by Janet Tashjian. Josh has his own website called the Gospel According to Larry. The website started out as a half joke until people actually really started looking at it. Pretty soon Josh's website is one of the most popular websites in the world. But just when everything seems perfect, people start trying to find out who Larry's true identity is. What will happen if Larry is exposed to the world? Will the website that has helped so many people be ruined forever?

I like this book because it, unlike most books, is a book that you can't stop reading. The reason it is so hard to put down is because it is exciting, and you don't know what will happen next. It has some parts that are hard to understand like when Josh helps an old lady by giving her his tooth brush, and how Josh doesn't want people to know who he is but he sends out hints anyway. This book is very interesting and is a book all teens should read.

Hard To Believe, and Some Problems

On the plus side, this was a very engaging book with fun characters that I grew to appreciate. Also, the book made me want to keep reading, made me curious, and did a good job describing its characters' emotions.

On the negative side, it was too hard for me to believe that the lead character's website became so famous. The website's sermons sounded too much like the ranting, silly posts you can find on numerous humdrum blogs. Why should the lead character's unspectacular website make it big, when so many others have not? This idea was tough to swallow. Still, I did appreciate the irony of an anti-consumerist making it big and "being consumed" by his fans.

There were some other small inconsistencies having to do with how much time was passing. And, further, several sections in the book had very brief, choppy descriptions, making it very difficult to picture what was going on.

Still, no doubt, this was a fun book. And I'm glad that a young philosopher like the lead character could seem so appealing --- even if his philosophy wasn't very well developed.
