New in the ?addicting? New York Times bestselling series featuring Sookie Stackhouse.

After the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina and the manmade explosion at the vampire summit, everyone?human and otherwise?is stressed, including Louisiana cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who is trying to cope with the fact that her boyfriend Quinn has gone missing.

It?s clear that things are changing?whether the weres and vamps of her corner of Louisiana like it or not. And Sookie?Friend to the Pack and blood-bonded to Eric Northman, leader of the local vampire community?is caught up in the changes.

In the ensuing battles, Sookie faces danger, death, and once more, betrayal by someone she loves. And when the fur has finished flying and the cold blood finished flowing, her world will be forever altered.

I thought the book was great

I see that a number of other reviewers gave this book a ho-hum review, but I liked the way the author showed how the events of Hurricane Katrina affected every group Sookie knew. To me that was the central theme of the book, and granted there was no compelling HUGE mystery, but there was suspense and a tie in to many of the past story lines. This is probably in my top three favorite Sookie stories now, so read and enjoy!

emotionally satisfying

I really really loved this book. It is not for those new to the series but for those of us that have been faithfully following along, it was great. I especially liked the girl power aspect of the story. It has become quite common to have one women surrounded by men but this time we see Sookie turning to other powerful women for strength and support. She also does a lot of the heavily lifting on her own, including coming to the rescue of several of the guys. Yes, of course the men are still there and we have a bit of the which one will she choose storyline but not too much because Sookie is too busy finding new family members, neutralizing a personal enemy, helping the pack avoid internal warfare, dealing with vampire politics and most importantly, living life after Katrina. I can't wait for book #9.

Terrific

Somebody (I forget who) once said that a short story is the most important event in the protagonist's life while a novel is the most important period of time in the protagonist's life. In this light, From Dead to Worse reads more like a series of short stories than a novel. The book covers a number of significant incidents but there is no one overarching conflict or dilemma, still, it all hangs together and it all works.

I like this book a lot and number of loose ends from earlier books are resolved. First, the were wars, second, the vampire wars. Niall, Sookie's long lost great-grandfather, a prince of the Fairies, makes an appearance. Some new characters are introduced and a few potential new (or rather, old...) love interests appear. A few small bloopers have escaped the editor. For instance, it is revealed that Claudine and Claude are Niall's grand-children, and therefore Sookie's cousins. Yet near the end of the book, in explaining his interest in Sookie, Niall states that she is his only living kin.

But the above is a minor quibble. Sookie's circle of friends expands, new possibilities for conflict emerge and the stage is set for many more episodes in this excellent series.

A transitional book

I just finished reading this. I've been following the series from the first book, and have enjoyed them all. Yes, this one too.

This is very much a transitional book. Suddenly the series is going into a multi-book arc, and so this isn't as much of a stand alone as all of the earlier books were. The author knows that she will be able to continue to write about this set of characters for a while, so she is getting her ducks in a row for something.

I don't know what that something is, but it is going to be interesting.
