Jody never asked to become a vampire. But when she wakes up under an alley Dumpster with a badly burned arm, an aching neck, superhuman strength, and a distinctly Nosferatuan thirst, she realizes the decision has been made for her.

Making the transition from the nine-to-five grind to an eternity of nocturnal prowlings is going to take some doing, however, and that's where C. Thomas Flood fits in. A would-be Kerouac from Incontinence, Indiana, Tommy (to his friends) is biding his time night-clerking and frozen-turkey bowling in a San Francisco Safeway. But all that changes when a beautiful undead redhead walks through the door ... and proceeds to rock Tommy's life -- and afterlife -- in ways he never imagined possible.

Officially one of my favorite Vampire novels

This is one of the few books that my husband read before me, and I had to sit there listening to him howl with laughter while I patiently waited for him to finish it. Many times he was brought to tears and had to stop reading so that he could breath. Now I was never brought to hysterics, but this IS a funny book. A vicious satire of vampire life, youthful dreams, and relationships without ever becoming a mushy romance or a bloodthirsty horror.

A short summary: Jody is a pretty redhead who wakes up under a dumpster after what she thought was a mugging to discover that she is a vampire. Unfortunately she never liked horror so she knows nothing about vampires. She enlists the help of a local night-shift grocery worker and aspiring writer to help her figure out how to negotiate her new lifestyle. Meanwhile the vampire that made her is leaving a trail of dead bodies throughout San Francisco and all the signs are pointing to her.

This book is funny, it's characters real... I would say they were over the top, but unfortunately I've known too many people like them to dismiss this as absurd. Though this is no great masterwork of literature, it is well written and extremely fun to read. Right at 300 pages I finished it in 2 hours, hesitating to put it down at all.

Now this book won't be for everyone, if you are looking for horror, this isn't it. If you are looking for sappy romance... well there's some romance but it's not the kind you are looking for, and if you are looking for Douglas Adams does Vampires for comedy, again you will be disappointed. Still this book is a really fun trip, enough fun that I ordered "You Suck: A Love Story" the sequel right away.

Happy Reading!

Best Modern Day Vampire

It's been awhile since a great vampire story has come along... Moore has really gone in a brand new direction with this one. Gone are all the vampire myths that we all know. But what makes this great is Tommy. Here's this semi-normal guy who knows the fictitious stories of vampires as well, and he now gets to compare notes with the real deal. Truly funny and original. Really loved the story.

New to Moore, will have to read more...

I know it makes me sound like a rube, but the only reason I heard of Christopher Moore is because I grabbed this book at Costco. I had no idea what to expect, but really enjoyed it. I have never been a big fan of the vampire genre, but this book seems to transcend it. Ironically, this is the second vampire book (the other being Already Dead by Charlie Huston) I have read in less than a month, after reading maybe one other in my entire life.

Bloodsucking Fiends is clever, funny, sexy, and light, and all written with an almost sing-song tone. I flew through this book, and would recommend it to anyone looking to suspend disbelief and go for a fun ride. I will read more of Moore.

The Little Things Bothered Me

Christopher Moore displays genius in Bloodsucking Fiends. Certain passage forced laughs from me like few books do. I loved the Emperor. He stood out.

So why four stars instead of five?

The ending rushes, certain events happen at breakneck speeds, and the book lacks closure. I didn't care for the way the ending treated The Emperor. I disliked the way it treated Simon--another favorite. And, without spoiling the plot, I hated the ending. I didn't believe it for a second. In effect, I felt like certain plot lines dangled unfinished, fabricated, and forced.

Overall, I loved the book. But, again, the way the book turned at the end--I found distasteful. I still recommend it, but I didn't like the way Mr. Moore treated those favorite characters. Perhaps, that's a good thing since I still thought about them long after I finished reading ... well, Simon and the Emperor.

Regardless, add Bloodsucking Fiends to your library. I'd still buy it again.

Pretty good. Very bad language.

This is not a romance novel. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that guys might not like this as much as gals. It is about a quirky, interesting vampire/human relationship. Jody gets turned into vampire. She needs a male helper who can run errands for her during the day. She meets Tommy a night worker at Safeway stores. Tommy says a lot of funny things. It's a fun relationship between Tommy as a human and Jody as a vampire.

Sexual content: not evaluated, but as I recall there was some sex. Setting: current day California. Copyright: 1995. Genre: humorous, contemporary, paranormal fiction.
