All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party ... and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining -- and it?s Rachel Morgan's job to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead ... or undead.

Great start to a series - gimme more!

I am completely enthralled by this series! Yes, I know I've only read the first book. And yes, I know that a lot of it is pretty... well, cheesy. I admit this. But it's also a lot of fun. The characters are great, Rachael is really likeable, and it's been awhile since I read a book of this nature that didn't rely on romance (and, you know...) to carry it. And that was more of a relief than I was willing to admit. That's not to say there's no hint of it - Rachael is sassy and admits to being slightly driven by hormones - but it's not something that would turn off people who don't like romances. The main storyline's a cross between a fast-paced, mindless action story and a real mystery - one that doesn't have any sort of predictable ending. In fact, it doesn't have an ending at all! So be warned, unless you're the type to enjoy reading a series, stay away. This is only a one-off book if you can handle some loose ends to your stories. Okay, quite a few loose ends.

So if you're willing to overlook a few cliché ideas and a little bit of overused dialogue for a fun and enjoyable story, this one's for you. There are far more clever bits than boring bits, anyway (I adore the part about the Ever After). I'd say it reminds me of the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris (minus the, ahem, 'adult' bits) and a little of the Sam Gunn series by Ben Bova. Vary conversational style to the narrative; it's very laid-back and pulls you into the tale. Plus, the characters are truly enjoyable. I can't wait to read the next one!

Fast Read

I liked the main character, and really started to care about what happened to her. The plot was quick, suspenseful, and fun. The narrative is lively, and I enjoyed the humor.

Dead Witch Walking is a Dead Bang Winner

I had accidentally picked up the second book in the series, having found it used. After the first 20 or so pages I was hooked, but I also realized that Harrison was referencing stuff that had happened in a previous book. After a little search, came across Dead Witch Walking and greedily read as fast as I could.

Right from the beginning Harrison drew me in with a Run involving Lucky Charms. Yup, you read that right. You know, like the cereal? Ha, this was and is great writing with a melding of a great story with contemporary insights thrown in. What does this do? It takes situations that we know of and are aware because of cartoons, stories, fables, poems, you name it. Lucky Charms? Vamps being staked? Pixies? Demons? Werewolves? Witches and Warlocks, Wizards and Sorceresses?

Nothing is off limit with Harrison as she touches on just about everything that is paranormal. And she does it with style, with nothing coming out cheesy or lame (okay, explanation needed: some seems cheesy but Harrison writes it in a way that makes it fun and believable and is an essential part to the storyline and Harrison's style of writing). Now one might wonder if she is merely re-writing what others have written, and I would have to say no. She changes the typical notions behind Vampires, their blood lust, their strengths and their weaknesses. How about what we would normally think of as a Witch and Warlock? Immediately we would assume that one is a man and the other is a woman, but Harrison changes this idea and makes it her own.

Harrison does this over and over again, constantly creating a story that is unique and fun, and definitely believable (if you can suspend your doubt about the paranormal). I am happy that I stumbled upon Harrison and now have a new fantasy author to look forward to. I can't wait to read the next in the series and whole heartedly recommend this book and author to everyone.

5 stars.

Dead Witch Walking

Kim Harrison creates a complete alternate world based on "What If" Something Huge happened that changed the our current events in a way that space flight and bio-enginering never happened. "What If" mankind shared the same space with beings straight out of our fairy tales and horror stories: you know un-dead or dead vampires, witches, werewolves, etc.; and, they were our lawful equals due to this Pandemic? Who, what, when, where, and how would we survive and co-exist. Enter Rachel Morgan, white witch, a mesmerizing loose cannon that in-thralls the reader with acts of great courage or thoughtless action as well as laughter; tears; supernatural horror; and, most of all wonder as to how did she possibley survive that. I intend to read all of Rachels adventures..she has througthly captured me.

Fun book

This novel was fun and silly and just want I want to blaze through in an airport and then hand off to someone else. No re-read required, but readable and entertaining at the same time. I need to get the rest of the series!! :) Or at least find them at my local library.
