Being undead sucks. Literally.

Just ask C. Thomas Flood. Waking up after a fantastic night unlike anything he's ever experienced, he discovers that his girlfriend, Jody, is a vampire. And surprise! Now he's one, too. For some couples, the whole biting-and-blood thing would have been a deal breaker. But Tommy and Jody are in love, and they vow to work through their issues.

But word has it that the vampire who initially nibbled on Jody wasn't supposed to be recruiting. Even worse, Tommy's erstwhile turkey-bowling pals are out to get him, at the urging of a blue-dyed Las Vegas call girl named (duh) Blue.

And that really sucks.

Review of You Suck (the audio version)

I think I started this on the wrong foot... You Suck was recommended to me, but I've never read anything by Christopher Moore, so I didn't realize that this was a sequel until about halfway through. It works just fine as a stand-alone story, but I'll definitely be picking up Bloodsucking Fiends.

This was one of the funniest books I've heard in a long time. It's vampires, it's romance, it's San Francisco. Abby Normal, the perky goth, makes this book worthwhile on her own. Moore clearly knows his setting and I got pretty nostalgic for the Bay Area. I've read some reviews complaining that there's a lack of plot for the book... and it really is more of a character piece. Of course, these are incredible characters with well-developed backgrounds, personalities, and voices.

I'd have to recommend the audio version of this - Susan Bennetts is the best narrator I've ever heard for an audiobook (that includes Tim Curry, which I feel guilty about). She can go from naive, midwestern Tommy to gangsta to goth to refined vampire, without you ever feeling that it's a stretch for her.

This book will make you want to steal a homeless guy's huge cat. And maybe shave it. And give it a sweater. Fair warning.

Such a LOVE story!!

My carpool rider and I got interested in audio books awhile back when a friend loaned me "A Dirty Job" by Christopher Moore. We were both amazed and spell-bound by all the twists and turns, and actually played several of the discs over again to make sure we got everything. We loved that book so much that when it was nearly over, we bought "Lamb," (NOT to be missed) also by Christopher Moore. We were then COMPLETELY hooked on Christopher Moore. Next, we bought "You Suck" and were, once again, carried away to the realm of Christopher Moore's mind. NEVER a dull moment, needed to re-wind and re-listen to sections where we laughed so hard we couldn't hear the CD, and most of those sections had to do with Abby Normal's Journal entries...hysterical!!! We would both recommend this audio book (or the paperback)for any listener/reader who enjoys being entertained, and we DEFINITELY recommend the audio book for anyone who does a lot of driving. We've never seen Rush Hour in D.C. go so quickly as when we're listening to Christopher Moore's talented yarn-spinning. A "MUST-BUY" for sure!!

Excellent followup to Bloodsucking Fiends

Before you begin reading this review, please be sure that you have read "Bloodsucking Fiends" which is the first in this series. If you read these reviews prior to reading "Bloodsucking Fiends" then you will already know how it ends - Now for the review.

"You Suck" picks up where "Bloodsucking Fiends" leaves off with Jody escaping her bronze statue and turning Tommy into a vampire so that she won't be alone. We follow the new Vampire couple as they search for a replacement minion. When they find one (a 16 year old wannabe goth/punk/drama queen) she is absolutely hysterical. The Animals are back - though not quite as funny as they were in "Bloodsucking Fiends" and of course the Emperor of San Francisco and Protector of Mexico returns with his two furry companions to do some more vampire hunting. Our old police friends return with bit parts and predominantly to have arguments with Abby the new minion. These are outlined in Abby's Diary which is in many cases the most hysterical part of the book.

Other than Abby, we have several other new characters, Blue the Vegas hooker who has died her skin blue, and a 30 pound cat named "Chett" with his homeless alcoholic owner. The banter in this book is great, the humor really picks up once they come across Abby, and the bits with Chett had me snickering to myself. I don't know that I would say that this is one of Moore's strongest works, but it is definitely a fun read. There are minor cameos from some of the characters in "Dirty Jobs" but you don't have to have read it to get the humor in that scene. If you are a fan of irreverent humor and happen to like vampires, then pour yourself a bloody latte and sit back in your running suit to enjoy this book.

Good Summertime Read

This is a light, humorous book, typical of Christopher Moore's hand. Lacking any didactic, socially redeeming values, nor any attempts to elucidate any great truths, it is excellent escapist literature, as it was intended to be. Enjoy.
