I have used the Cambodian-English picture dictionary for teaching both English to Khmer speakers and Khmer to English speakers. As a tool for building vocabulary and provoking free conversation on a one-to-one basis, there can be few better. As a self teaching tool it is also invaluable. Above all it is clear, accurate and attractive to work with.

Excellent reference material for Khmer speakers

This book is a useful reference for teaching Khmer speaking people to learn English. It is successful in helping to form that mental bond between a word and the object it belongs to with simple to understand pictures. Since the caption of the picture is in both English and Khmer, both speakers can communicate to each other. I am even learning words that I had not known before because my student is teaching me how to say them (I do not know how to read Khmer).

I especially like how this book not only instructs a person on English, but also introduces the student to several facets of American life such as holidays, some history, etc.

But a book like this should only be used for Khmer speakers that possess some English literacy or, if not, then an English speaking person should be present. This book cannot and should not be used as a self-teaching English book. While a good book, it is structured in a way that it would fit better in a classroom rather than as a self-teaching study.

Furthermore, this is not a dictionary, so do not take this with you if you plan on visiting Cambodia. However, I do not see many illustrated books on teaching English to Khmer speakers as well written as this one. A major help if you are in the same boat as I am.

The Best EVER!

I have not yet tried the Khmer version of the Oxford Picture Dictionary, but I purchased a Spanish one this summer and fell in love with it! It's the best language-learning tool besides an auditory tutorial. This book is wonderful and I recommend it to anyone. I have been taking Spanish for 5 years and I am a fluent speaker, but I was still able to find so many words I had never seen in a regular dictionary and probably never have learned otherwise. WONDERFUL! I can't wait to try this one.

Absolutely Essential for Cambodian/English Speakers

I am in a fortunate position of being able to employ a live-in maid. She is a wonderful girl from Cambodia and this book has been a wonderful aid for her to learn english as she only reads khymer. Definitely a must have for any Cambodian's who need to communicate (as well as learning English) and conversely any English speaking person who needs to communicate with Cambodians.

Perfect for Cambodian Beginner!
