What is Gotcha Capitalism?

Coughing up $4 fees for ATM transactions. Iron-clad cell phone contracts you can?t get out of with a crowbar. Paying big bucks for insurance you don?t need on a rental car or forking over $20 a day for supposedly ?free? wireless internet. Every day we use banks, cell phones, and credit cards. Every day we book hotels and airline tickets. And every day we get ripped off.
How? Here are just a few examples of how big business can get you:

? You didn?t fill up the rental car with gas?
Gotcha! Gas costs $7 a gallon here.
? Your bank balance fell to $999.99 for one day?
Gotcha! That?ll be $12.
? You miss one payment on that 18-month same-as-cash loan?
Gotcha! That?ll be $512 extra.
? You?re one day late on that electric bill?
Gotcha! All your credit cards now have a 29.99% interest rate.

But not for much longer. In Gotcha Capitalism, MSNBC.com?s ?Red Tape Chronicles? columnist Bob Sullivan exposes the ways we?re all cheated by big business, and teaches us how to get our money back?proven strategies that can help you save more than $1,000 a year.

From Myope to Sophisticate

This book has been added to my library of quick reference books! As someone who is now living on a tight budget because of rising prices, it's important that I not get cheated on top of the erosion of my discretionary income. It's not that I wasn't aware of these unfair practices, rather that like so many I hadn't taken the time to pay attention. Just reading this book made me realize that unless we all speak up and stop these tactics, we're in collusion with the companies.

I highly recommend Bob Sullivan's book to those interested in what's happening to our consumer rights.

This should be taught in Schools

This Book should be a part of a program taught in every School. Thank you Ralph Nader for the Heads-up on this one.

A must read ESPECIALLY for young adults

Gotca Capitalism can help anyone navigate some unnessesary problems. College students as well as young adults in perticular. I wish this usefull weapon against gready companies was around for me when I was younger. Sullivan exposes some scary,(but legal!) tactics used by companies to separate you from your hard earned money. A MUST read!

Nothing ground breaking, but informative

If you've never thought about the fees cable companies, cell phones carriers etc. charge, this book might shock you. Not only are theses hidden fees exposed, but there are form letters and phone scripts that might be very effective for getting your money back. But who has that kind of time? not me.
For most people, I'm guessing you have a vague sense that things aren't entirely fair, but you go on about your life. For those people (like myself) this book is informative, if depressing. The background information on how banks, phone companies etc. bilk you a little bit at a time was enlightening, and I did learn a few things to look for when signing contracts in the future. However, I have a feeling that the people that are indignant enough to fight these fees are already doing the things recommended in the book. Overall, a good read - but I don't see myself purring many of the recommendations into use.
