ESSENTIAL READING FOR ANY STUDENT OF SHAKESPEARE'S KING RICHARD III
The only slight complaint about this selection
from
the The Yale Edition of The Complete
Works
of St.
Thomas
More
: Volume 2, The
History
of
King
Richard
III
(The Yale Edition of The Complete Works o) is its being the "modernized
series
of
Selected
Works." Unfortunately the several compelling, brilliant and witty articles and epigrams which fill out this volume, originally written in
Latin
, are here most cruelly presented in
English
only.
Nevertheless, this 170 page volume is essential study for anyone interested in the Shakespearean tragedy King Richard III (Arden Shakespeare: Second Series) as it served as source and perspective for that great drama, as fascinating as any of Shakespeare's great villianous plays, including Titus Andronicus (Oxford World's Classics), and certainly condemnatory of that king.
This rather slim volume serves not only as background to that play but also as a fine introduction to this great Catholic saint and martyr for the Faith, and, seemingly contradictory, learned lawyer. The biography of this machiavellian British king Richard III (whose symbol the warthog stands upon the cover) written by Thomas More comes with
selections
from his early poetry in English, and several selections from his Latin writings, unfortunately as mentioned above here presented only in English, but nevertheless reflecting the great wit and genius which is Saint Thomas More, he who refused to bow to the whims of the Empire of his day, as we must not now. It is impossible for me to read these great writings without hearing them in the distinctive voice of the great Paul Scofield, who played Saint Thomas More in the film A Man for All Seasons (Special Edition).
Students of Shakespeare's King Richard III will also want to pre-order the welcome, coming Norton Critical Edition already offered here upon the amazon, though still without a link through the reviews.
