Why is it that despite our best efforts, many of us remain fundamentally unhappy and unfulfilled in our lives? In this provocative and inspiring book, David Richo distills thirty years of experience as a therapist to explain the underlying roots of un
happiness
?and the surprising secret to
find
ing freedom and fulfillment.
There are certain facts of life that we
cannot
change
?the unavoidable "givens" of human existence: (1) everything changes and ends, (2)
things
do not always go according to plan, (3) life is not always fair, (4) pain is a part of life, and (5) people are not loving and loyal all the time. Richo shows us that by dropping our deep-seated resistance to these givens, we can find liberation and discover the true richness that life has to offer. Blending Western psychology and Eastern spirituality, including practical exercises, Richo shows us how to open up to our lives?including to what is frightening, painful, or disappointing?and discover our greatest gifts.

Direct - straight to the heart
Admittedly I am very left-brained (to my chagrin and dismay) and am especially drawn to "list"-bearing self-help books, e.g., Chapppelear's The Daily Six, Ruiz's The Four Agreements. When I started my study of Buddhism and heard the first noble truth, I thought - what? Is that it? Is it really all that bad? I enjoy David Richo immensely, as I feel he maintains the balance between the sentimental and practical approaches to
happiness
. What I
find
especially valuable here is that Richo's writing doesn't coddle us into cloying cheerfulness by denying our pain. We often focus on the pain to the degree that we identify ourselves with it or simply deny its existence - hence the multi-billion dollar anti-depressant industry. It's easy to love life when
things
are going well - your challenge here is to embrace those unchanging things that don't.

This is one of those books you want to give to all your friends and family. We are using it as the base for our adult discussion group at church and we have had most meaningful discussions sharing our reactions.
Excellent read!
This is a particularly captivating book, not only because it is more eloquent than a feel-good self help book that reads as if it's addressed to a 13 year old, but because of the surprising amount of content that you have to pause, think about, and appreciate. I'm a quarter way done with the book, and have gone back and read from the start over a dozen times. The first chapter's phenomenal. Enjoy.

The Five Things You Cannot Change
This is a great book that helps in
find
ing peace of mind and heart. Releasing our attachment to HAVING
things
different often allows us to EXPERIENCE life differently, and after all, isn't that what
change
really is? It is a guide to the Serenity Prayer...grant me the serenity to accept the things I
cannot
change; the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Highly recommended.
Excellent Book
This book builds upon much of Richo's earlier work, and is a helpful tool in navigating life's problems.
