MEDITATION
FOR BEG
INNER
S is a very helpful CD/book combination package. The book is slender and a bit poetical, more a staging item for the CD than anything else.
The CD features Jack Kornfeld guiding the novice meditator through a series of four
meditations
with breathing exercises. Not surprisingly, the majority of this disc consists of silence. The beginner will find Kornfeld's gentle reminders to "watch your breath" or "let go of that thought" very helpful, though the more experienced meditator will be able to largely disregard the occasional commentary.
This CD makes an excellent introductory presentation of the practice of Vipassana Meditation or Zazen; what is particularly helpful, especially for the practitioner sitting at home or meditating alone, is the discretely timed sittings, each ending with a chime (inkin). Thus the meditator can relax and worry not at all about the passage of time.
This is largely a pragmatic user's guide; the disc lacks any discussion of "theory" or any references to the various schools and forms of meditative practice. In sum, it's the Sounds of Silence.

I Finally Learned to Meditate..in 5 Minutes!
I've been trying to meditate for about 20 years and found i could stay focused for about 30 seconds max. Jack's kind and soothing voice and words made it happen almost instantly..a miracle!
the book is the best part
I just got this book with the included CD tonight. When I was looking at this item I told myself that the CD should be thought of as a 'bonus'. I'm glad I did. The book reads nicely and cuts right to the chase about how to begin
meditation
and build your own practice. The CD, however, is anything but soothing. This man's voice is loud and unsettling. He might as well be giving instructions on how to pull your own teeth. The silence is the best part. The book is worth it though. I looked at a lot of other texts, that basically took 200-300 plus pages to discuss meditation including history, different methods, and a little on how to begin a practice. I'm pleased overall. I just won't be using the CD that often, if ever.
