This edition includes a new Foreword by CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling GOD IS NOT GREAT.

In the paperback's afterword, Victor Stenger addresses criticisms of his New York Times bestselling first edition.

Throughout history, arguments for and against the existence of God have been largely confined to philosophy and theology. In the meantime, science has sat on the sidelines and quietly watched this game of words march up and down the field. Despite the fact that science has revolutionized every aspect of human life and greatly clarified our understanding of the world, somehow the notion has arisen that it has nothing to say about the possibility of a supreme being, which much of humanity worships as the source of all reality.

Physicist Victor J. Stenger contends that, if God exists, some evidence for this existence should be detectable by scientific means, especially considering the central role that God is alleged to play in the operation of the universe and the lives of humans. Treating the traditional God concept, as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, like any other scientific hypothesis, Stenger examines all of the claims made for God's existence.

He considers the latest Intelligent Design arguments as evidence of God's influence in biology. He looks at human behavior for evidence of immaterial souls and the possible effects of prayer. He discusses the findings of physics and astronomy in weighing the suggestions that the universe is the work of a creator and that humans are God's special creation.

After evaluating all the scientific evidence, Stenger concludes that beyond a reasonable doubt the universe and life appear exactly as we might expect if there were no God.

Breaking Out of the Ghetto

Coming this late to the party, I better have something non-redundant to contribute. Actually, I read back through the hundred-and-some reviews and appended commentaries (Whew!), and on that basis, I recommend three critics of Stenger's book for those of you who don't wish to work through the entire list-- Kyle Demming (p.4 of the reviewer list), Mike Heath (p.6), and especially Wesley Jensen (p.7). All, I believe, have substantive criticisms well-grounded (how well is up to the reader) and worth pondering, along with informative follow-up comments. By singling them out, I'm not saying that other critiques or critical observations don't merit consideration-- though many, as you might expect., do not.-- only that in my view, each of the three makes a series of substantive points.

As an atheist, I'm certainly in agreement with the spirit of Stenger's effort. In a less partisan spirit, however, I think it's best to keep in mind, once again, that the god whose existence he's aiming to disprove is the popular God of the Bible, i.e, the intercessory God who saves souls, answers prayers, performs miracles, creates a universe, and generally presides over all things mundane. In short, the God whom the ordinary believer pledges undying fealty to. Now, not being a biblical scholar, I'm not sure just how many versions of the deity might be contained therein. So I too, am not always clear on how many other, perhaps more intellectually refined and less orthodox theologies, he believes science also refutes. However, the popular version is more than enough given the current born-again madness that unfortunately reaches into the highest levels of the land.

No more need be said.

Logically demolishes theism. Therefore, will have no effect on theists, but one can always hope.

Religion needs to knock it off.

People 2000 years ago knew nothing about the universe so they made sh#t up. They were a frightened, ignorant people who, without the scientific tools we have today, explained things through creative writing. Of course I can't prove that god doesn't exist, nor can I prove that insects don't like pornography. I mean they might. Who are you to tell me otherwise? In fact, let's start a belief system which worships pornography-loving bugs. "All praise the sick and perverted grasshopper, and defend us from the evil doers, allah, and anyone else that gets in our way and doesn't like porn." I could make up things all day long that can't be proven, but that doesn't make them valid arguments. Use your brain and stop believing in fantasy. You're an adult, for god's sake!

Simon says

I have been a long term reader-thinker of and about the "God" question etc. I found that "Hypothesis" was a review of much of what I had already learned but the material was very well organized for the author's purpose. The last point made (Why there is something rather nothing?) seems to be derived from the latest understandings of Cosmology combined with quantum mechanical tenets. These areas of modern physics are quite difficult for the layman to grasp (including me). But Stenger's position is fairly well supported by his other points.
I had no difficulty with most of the book and was overwhelmed by the extensive referencing. Finally, I don't see any continuation of the road after this delivery. So "hats off" to Victor.

God told me this book is wrong, but I don't believe Him

Who can disprove me, and why should anyone even care to?

All desperate yearning for purpose and meaning aside, this seems such a useless pursuit. I keep my rating in the middle, on account of the possibility that all of these God books are being written by individuals having a grand old time pissing off the other camp. In either case they are all losers in the end, but I hope they go down laughing.

If I have offended you, I apologize. That should not have happened, but please keep in mind it won't last forever.
