Too often, we pay attention to negative behaviors and ignore the positive. Unfortunately, by doing this we encourage the opposite of
what
we want. This children?s rhyming book was inspired by a true
story
, and details the experience of a father and son who
learned
this lesson while visiting a local amusement park. There, they meet Fat Freddy, a highly trained
penguin
who was rewarded with a fish and a hug each time he performed a trick correctly. The father learns a valuable lesson about recognizing and rewarding good behavior after watching the s
how
. He realizes that doing so is more effective than punishing or giving attention to negative behavior, and in turn,
change
s the way he manages his own son. The result is a closer, stronger relationship. This book is both entertaining as well as a valuable educational tool, and is recommended for children and adults alike.

My kids just don't get this one.
Though I really like the idea behind this book, my kids just weren't getting it. The book is about a father leaning to use positive re-enforcement with his child after getting no where using punishments. He gets the idea
from
the trainer of Fat Freddie, a
penguin
who can do some amazing stuff. The message in this book is more useful for the parents then the child. I don't see
how
a child could identify with the parent's struggle to discipline and even if they could, they would have a hard time challenging their parent to use positive instead of negative re-enforcement. (When you were 10, would you have told your mother or father that they should
change
the way they discipline you?). My kids were more interested in the penguin itself rather then the message of using positive reinforcement. Over all, it is a cute book with a great concept but falls short on providing an interesting message to children.
