Richard Cohen, a former homosexual, now married with three children, struggled for most of his life with unwanted same-sex attractions. He tried desperately to find professionals who understood his condition and help him heal. Because "it was so difficult to explain myself to therapists, who didn't have a clue," Cohen eventually became a psychotherapist and developed both a groundbreaking understanding of same-sex attractions and a comprehensive treatment plan for healing homosexuality. "Coming Out Straight" not only details Cohen's personal journey out of homosexuality but also recounts his experiences helping thousands of men, women and adolescents heal their gender identity.

Recoginizing that the "gay rights movement" has done a great service in bringing the issue of homosexuality of the closet and into the light, Cohen points out that in the name of tolerance, society has now succumbed to acceptance. "If we embrace someone's! homosexuality as normal and natural, their potential for wholeness will remain dormant beneath their emotional wounds. It's not bad to have same-sex attractions, as they represent a drive to heal unmet love needs. However, acting uupon them leads to frustration and pain."

In simple language, "Coming Out Straight" presents the basic causes of same-sex attractions, a clear model for recovery, and stories of individuals who made the change. The book has three parts: In Part I, the author shares his own story and the root causes of same-sex attractions. Part II presents a four-stage model of recovery and healing. Part III discusses the healing of homophobia by overcoming fear and hatred of homosexuality.

While the book is meant to educate therapists, clergy, and other professionals, it also assists those who struggle with their own same-sex attractions as well as their loved ones. "Coming Out Straight" sets forth an easy to understand primer on homosexuality, both for family members and friends of homosexuals, as well as for the general public. It will open the door to a new, happier, and fulfilling heterosexual life.

Message of truth and hope

On all books I read about masculinity, this one struck me most because it is built up upon personal experience+practice and gives insight of what is going on behind the curtain of appearance, fashion and prejudice. It reveals significant truth about same sex attraction and offers powerful tools to deal with that! Understanding these problems is essential for evolution! I highly recommand this book to parents, teenagers, teachers, counselors or any person who cares about masculinity!

PRESCRIPTION FOR HEALING

I am grateful to Richard Cohen for his courage and perseverance and commitment in being a voice for a new point of view on homosexuality and healing. This book provides a prescription for healing that can actually be applied by anyone who is struggling to become his or her authentic self. I find Richard's book to be in the same league as Lucia Capacchione (Art of Emotional Healing, The Power of Your Other Hand) and Hal and Sidra Stone (Embracing Our Selves). It is easy to read, with a good balance of testimonies, theory, and what to do. Thank you, Richard!

Authoritative source for understanding same-sex attraction

Recently, I attended a seminar that was conducted by Richard Cohen. Richard is a kind and gentle man who is very knowledgeable on the topic of same-sex attraction. I came to the seminar with the goal of trying to understand why some people are experiencing same-sex attraction. I also wanted to learn if there was anything that could be done to help people.

What I learned surpassed my expectations. I learned that, when done correctly and lovingly by trained professionals, reorientation therapy can help people heal from the underlying emotional wounds and other factors that contribute to feelings of same-sex attraction. It is not an easy road and it may take several years, but if someone is committed healing can take place. Richard is a living example of that and so are many others.

With this deeper understanding I now have increased compassion for people who experience same-sex attraction. We need to love them and denounce any attempts to treat them badly.

Something else that I learned is that the same causative factors that may lead to same-sex attraction can also be at the root of relationship problems that heterosexuals have.

There is no basis for the "born that way ... can't change" myth. As I explained before, same-sex attraction is a symptom of underlying emotional and sexual brokenness as well as a multitude of other contributing factors. Every person's background is unique. As a holistic health professional I know that often healing cannot take place if we only treat the symptoms of a disease without recognizing and addressing the underlying causes. It's like giving someone a Tylenol for a headache without recognizing that there is a brain tumor. Richard's multi-step approach is very comprehensive and helps a person understand what he or she needs to do so he or she may heal.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It needs to be a part of the library of any health professional, counselor, therapist, religious leader, teacher, and parent. Yes, every parent, because our children are being bombarded and indoctrinated with incorrect information regarding same-sex attraction.

Let us be respectful of those who have a desire to change their sexual orientation and those who have already done so. Healing is possible.

I came out straight, too.

I'm sure this wonderful book will help lots of people, though some people may react against it.
I'm happily married with children, but I had several gay loves before marriage (25 years ago). Four years of therapy and the love of friends (straight and gay) helped me to come out straight. In fact it worked better than I expected.
I now see that everyone needs the love of both men and women, but not always in a sexual way. Whether we sexualize our need for love is a choice. Many adults have lost that ability to choose (through family/social pressure or trauma), and feel impelled to sexualize things that others don't. Therapy, faith, or meeting the right person (or a combination of these) can help some people to regain their ability to choose what to sexualize, and what not to sexualize. This cannot be forced. Therapy/religion that contains force or unrealistic expectation may lead to disappointment. Everyone must find his/her own way.
