Edited and with an Introduction by David Stuart Davies
'The figure of my wife came in... it came straight towards the bed... its wide eyes were open and looked at me with love unspeakable'
Edith Nesbit, best known as the author of The Railway Children and other children's classics, was also the mistress of the ghost story and tales of terror. She was able to create genuinely chilling narratives in which the returning dead feature strongly. Sadly, these stories have been neglected for many years, but now, at last, they are back in print. In this wonderful collection of eerie, flesh-creeping yarns, we encounter love that transcends the grave, reanimated corpses, vampiric vines, vengeful ghosts and other dark delights to make you feel fearful. These vintage spooky stories, tinged with horror, are told in a bold, forthright manner that makes them seem as fresh and unsettling as today's headlines.

Some good chilling tales...

I was truly impressed with this collection of tales. Nesbit is a gifted storyteller and her tales are subtle, not simple, packing a 'chilling' punch.

Again, I was truly impressed. The majority of the tales take place in England and have some elements of Poe, some of M.R. James. Nesbit goes back and forth between male and female narrators and the third-person perspective. To some extent, the tales look forward to H.P. Lovecraft ('The Three Drugs' especially and 'The Five Senses' - which also has a bit of Poe). There is a Gothic feel but a fine balance between narration and setting the mood. I think this is something to read, to appreciate, to explore. Each tale is satisfying and perfect if you need something to read while on the go (the majority of stories are ten-twelve pages in length).

I'm not familiar with Nesbit's children's novels. I plan on reading them next. But if you like Nesbit or like a good story that is well-written, please pick up this book. It's nice to find something unexpected. And this was unexpected for me.
