When his father died during the Depression, he declared himself man of the family. When he founded the Mark Foutch Brass Band in 1954, people cheered. When he flew his P-51, they looked to the sky. When American society confounded him in the 1960s and ?70s, he played his music louder and flew his plane harder. After his death, a concealed clue in a letter sent into a Pacific jungle sixty years earlier is deciphered to reveal the psychological motivations behind the rich and complex life of Dr. Mark R. Foutch, eye doctor, aviator, bandleader and teller of tall tales.

Excellent book!

Paul Foutch obviously put a lot of research into this interesting look into his grandfather's life. It's a fun story and an easy read.

Foutch delivers

The highly remarkable Dr. Mark Foutch Jr. practiced optometry, flew a P-51 Mustang (for fun) and directed renowned marching bands.
You'd think that would bring "Doc" Foutch, a gregarious big-tipper, raconteur and channeler of W. C. Fields, all the attention, admiration and affection he needed. But no.
He exaggerated, embellished and, once or twice, even fabricated details of his already impressive curricula vitae.
Happily, for readers who treasure engaging books by talented authors, "Doc" also left behind a grandson whose remembrance of him does the lovably bombastic old bull goose justice - no mean feat.
With "The Show is on the Podium," the grandson - Texas newspaperman Paul Foutch - lovingly and honestly recounts his amazing grandfather's life and times.
Exhaustively researched, compellingly written, by turns moving and hilarious, the book is Foutch's first.
Its readers are sure to eagerly await, as I do, his next.

A memorable story

"The Show Is On the Podium" is the story of a precocious young man whose talent took him to war as a euphonium player with a U.S. Army division in the Philippines, came home, got married (again), became a successful optometrist, founded the Mark Foutch Brass Band, had his share of problems with his kids during their teen and early adult years, owned and flew a surplus P-51 Mustang, and passed on pretty much on his terms. Millions of military veterans served the cause of freedom, returned home and led more and less exemplary lives, but "The Show" is a memorable story one of those millions. ... Paul R. Foutch and his family deserve tremendous credit for sharing a fascinating story with the world. I found the book hard to put down, not because of suspense or incipient dooms, but because the author weaves the colorful fabric of his family so well. Thousands of others, I predict -- I hope -- will feel likewise.
