No Gimmicks, Real Results

After following the advice in this book for four weeks, I'm within 20 pounds of my goal weight for the first time in five years. I've done Atkins and South Beach, but my weight loss would always stall after the first two weeks. Jim Karas' approach involves getting you to first believe that you can follow a sensible, effective weight loss program, and then he gives you the diet and exercise guidelines you need. Yes, you will have to exercise, resistance/weight training is crucial, and you will have to follow an eating plan that asks you to burn more calories than you take in. All I know is, I feel and look better than I have in years.

It's all about lifestyle change

First, I not a big reader and I don't run around saying "Oh, you've got to read this book!" but this particular one has been very helpful in keeping me motivated as I journey down the path of attaining a healthly weight and lifestyle. I have lost a total of 65 pounds (15 to go) over the course of a year and everybody asks me "what are you doing?" -- I tell them it's all about correcting bad behavior and replacing it with healthy habits -- there is no magic pill, potion or program. This book is not a program or a diet, it's all about that -- something that each person can adopt in their own way and live with. Everyone knows what they should do, a lot of it is the mental stuff that everyone has to deal with to stay motivated to lose or maintain a healthy weight. I do weigh myself once a day AND write it down to keep track, I do count calories informally (it becomes second nature), and I exercise regulary (power-walking, gym or sports). For these reasons, I love this book, refer back to it frequently and have recommended it to several others.

No-nonsense book to help change your mindset

I've been varying degress of overweight all my adult life, but in the last 5 years, I ballooned up to nearly 100 pounds over my healthy weight. I've always known what it takes to lose weight -- expend more calories than you take in -- but still had a tough time trying to take off any significant amount of weight. This book helped me make the mental change I needed to get the weight off. So far, I've lost 35 pounds (in 3 months), and still have a very strong resolve to get the rest off. I don't feel 'deprived' in any way -- just the opposite, as a matter of fact. The book does not contain any radical new info; no 'magic bullet'. But for me, this book has truly helped me "flip the switch".

Excellent information for weight loss and fitness

Jim Karas has a terrific message for attaining weight loss and general health and fitness. His program involves life-long change to the excessive eating habits many persons have, and advocates resistance and strength training over cardiovascular (treadmills, etc.), in order to build muscle tissue which burns more calories than fat. For older persons (I am 71) this added strength keeps bones strong and minimizes risk of falling. I am following his program, plus am engaged in tennis and bicycling for additional endurance. Recommend buying this, as well as his other two books.
