Two complete novels and a short novel in one large volume:

Komarr?Miles Vorkosigan is sent to Komarr, a planet that could be a garden with a thousand more years of terraforming; or an uninhabitable wasteland, if the terraforming project fails. The solar mirror vital to the project has been shatteredby a ship hurtling off course, and Miles Vorkossigan has been sent to find out if it was an accident, or sabotage. Miles uncovers a plot that could exile him from Barrayar forever?and discovers an unexpected ally, one with wounds as deep and honor as beleaguered as his own.

A Civil Campaign? On Komarr, Miles met the beautiful Vor widow Ekaterin Vorsoisson, who has no intention of getting married after the heartbreak and betrayal of her first experience. But Miles has a cunning plan to change her mind. Unfortunately his clone-brother Mark and his cousin Ivan have cunning plans of their own, and the three-way collision of cunning plans threatens to undo Miles?s brilliant romantic strategy.

?Winterfair Gifts??Miles and Ekaterin make elaborate preparations for their wedding. But Miles has an enemy who is plotting to turn the romantic ceremony into a festival of death.

Three books under one cover

At first glance Bujold fans might be enthusiastic at yet another addition to the Vorkosigan world - but actually this is 3 novels under one cover: two prior books reprinted plus a much shorter novelette. Still, science fiction collections with fans of either Bujold or military science fiction will find it a very popular, recommended acquisition; especially for newcomers who will find the 'three books under one cover' setup attractive.

Nice omnibus edition for collectors and people who haven't read the stories

This book is a composite of two previously published novels and an underappreciated short story. The novels are very good, and stood well on their own. Being combined in this edition is a great way to pick them up, if you haven't read them yet. Both novels are about the further adventures of Miles Vorkosigan. In Komarr, Miles is appointed Imperial Auditor, and must solve a mystery, the solution of which has political ramifications. It is a story of Miles maturing, and becoming more than just a manic, mad adventurer. A Civil Campaign is the story of Miles' pursuit of his future wife. In it, he is accused of a murder. Both books are very well-written and live up to the high standard Ms. Bujold has set with her writings. The short story is a romance set during the wedding of Miles and Ekaterin. Saying so is unfortunately a minor spoiler for A Civil Campaign. However, the story does not revolve solely around Miles, but instead is just as much about Taura, who Miles rescued in a previous adventure, and who now works for him as part of his livery. Others have complained about the typos that seem to have crept into this printing. However, while possibly irritating, they don't really detract from the story. The story was originally published in Irresistable Forces, an anthology of romances set in science fiction or fantasy milieus. The story is a nice postscript to A Civil Campaign, and works well as long as you realize it is not meant to add anything new to the Milesian canon. Be a bit careful reading some of the long-winded reviews of this and other items on Amazon; many of them seem to be written by people who review for the sake of posting as many reviews as possible, but haven't actually read the book. I really enjoyed Winterfair Gifts and the two novels. I can't really see buying the whole volume just to read the story, but if you haven't read the novels, you won't be disappointed. And Miles fans will be glad to know that Ms. Bujold has accepted a contract to write a *new* Miles novel. So we have something to look forward to.

Another compilation BUT it contains my favorites

Be warned, this is yet another compilation. I already own both novels and the short story separately, BUT I wanted to say that these are my favorite stories in the entire series. If you haven't already read these particular novels, I'd recommend this compilation.

I've been hooked on this series for years, but Komarr is my favorite novel in the entire set. (Followed closely by Shards of Honor and Barrayar which I have in the compilation Cordelia's Honor) I've read it several times. The way Miles falls in love with Ekaterin was breathtaking. I loved their scenes together. Ekaterin proves herself as a hero in both small ways and big ones. She truly is Vor and a suitable match for Miles.

A Civil Campaign has a different feel to it, but parts of it were so funny they made me laugh out loud. Bug butter. Bugs with Vorkosigan insignia on them. It also has Koudelka girls galore.

I haven't seen this printing of the short story Winterfair Gifts so I can't comment on the editing, but I highly enjoyed this story when I found it in the anthology of her short stories called Irresistible Forces. I thought the story was wonderful, even if Miles and Ekaterin weren't the main focus. I had felt cheated when the novels jumped from A Civil Campaign (before the wedding) to Diplomatic Immunity (where they're already married). I wanted to see their wedding, so was very happy when this allowed me to. I always liked Taura, so seeing her get a makeover by Aunt Alys was hysterical. It was also interesting to see behind the scenes how things worked in the manor through the eyes of one of the guards.

A New Direction for a Good Character

Miles Vorkosigan is a familiar character but he takes on a different look in the eyes of others in these books.

The Komarr novel centers on Ekaterin, who eventually becomes a love interest. Her flattering view of Miles and diminished view of herself reflects the same attitudes that Miles has towards her. The conviction each has that the other can't possibly be interested sustains the narrative tension.

A Civil Campaign, the second novel, shows Miles at his worst (but believably so). It also shows Ekaterin gaining the confidence she needs to turn the tables on Miles and on Vor society as a whole. The viewpoints of other characters, such as Mark (the clone brother of Miles), give added depth to the situation.

Winterfair Gifts, a short story, does an excellent job of showing how Miles' cynicism and powers of deduction can save the day. This story was, for me, the most fun of the three.

Romance, adventure, and the latest Miles Vorkosigan story

This edition contains the novels "Komarr" where Miles meets Ekaterin, the love of his life, "A Civil Campaign" where he attempts to court her with mixed success, and "Winterfair Gifts" where he Marries her, but not before nearly losing her to a murder plot. We get to see more of Sergeant Taura and Armsman Roic. I bought this edition in order to get my hands on the last story, which is the only published Miles Vorkosigan story I had not read, and it is a treat. It is realy nice to have all three stories in one volume.

I have only two criticisms of this edition. 1) The editing on Winterfair Gifts was a little disappointing - there were a number of typos. 2) The dust jacket art was okay, but not up to the standard of some of the paperback editions.
