An intimate perspective into the life of the most visible religious leader in America, as told and authorized by his wife.

Jerry Falwell played a pivotal role in the American religious and political scene for the last thirty years. As a constant voice for the Christian Right, and with his strong affirmations for family values, he remained outspoken about his beliefs and vision for revolutionized morals and social reform, including issues that will greatly affect the upcoming 2008 elections. Readers will be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at theprivate life of Jerry Falwell, giving insight into his most publicized and controversial events, such as: His friendship with Ronald Reagan His relationship to Larry Flynt What led to the concept and formation of the Moral Majority The reaction to his September 11 remarks

Macel Falwell, Rev. Falwell's widow, provides this official biography of the founder of the Moral Majority. Along with never-before-seen photographs, Macel gives a personal viewpoint and tells readers stories from across the decades, including some from his children, that show the man behind the passion.

An informative book, and also a very uplifting one

Rev. Jerry Falwell was one of the larger-than-life people who seemed to dominate the U.S. in the 1980s. Many loved him, and some hated him with a vitriol that surpassed reason. In this biography of Rev. Falwell, his loving wife tells the tale of his life from his birth, through his youth to his conversion, through the many controversies of the 1980s and 90s, and through his death in his office.

Overall, I found this to be an informative book, and also a very uplifting one. The tale of Rev. Falwell's conversion and attachment to his faith really touched me. Now, as this book was written by someone with a definite "agenda," you can argue that some things are probably missing. That's right, this book isn't written as an expose, instead what it is is a tribute to a great man, written by his biggest fan. So, if you want a book that tears Jerry Falwell down, then you will be disappointed - don't read this book. But, if you want an uplifting story of a Christian man's life, then I do think that you will like this book.

What you won't hear from the media

Insightful & thought provoking read from Falwell's wife of nearly 50 years. Expect to catch a glimpse of the man you didn't see on TV or hear about in the media. Dr. Falwell's love of God, family & country comes through in an easy-to-read, hard-to-put-down format.

Jerry Falwell: His Life and Legacy

I had the distinct privilege to work for "Doc" from 1973 to 1985. Every word is true and reading it was like a family reunion.
The proof of Macel's account concerning raising their children can be seen by watching Jonathan preach and I'm certan it applies to J.J. also - they make the fathers heart in me swell with pride: something I'm sure I share with Jerry as he too watches over them'

a book to read and re-read and to share

Falwell's Farewell

I wasn't a big fan of Jerry Falwell. There were times that I was outright disgusted with what he had to say, and there were times that I thought more people should be as solid in their preaching the Gospel as he was.

I picked up the book just wanting to get the behind the scenes facts about Falwell, but I came out admiring the man and his work. His wife authors the book, and the one complaint I have about it is that fact that she rarely lets his mistakes stand. She is an apologist for her husband, and although I understand, I wish she could and would have admitted his mistakes more. With that said, I enjoyed the book. It began with a look at his meager upbringing, his call to the ministry, and then his journey to Liberty Mountain and all that it encompasses.

He was such a huge giver of things, especially money, and I found myself being convicted by his detachment to money. He would pretty much just give things away without thinking about it. He gave away money, his shoes, his coat, scholarships to his school, etc...and at times it left him in trouble, but his heart was in the right place.

I also admire his reliance on the Lord to answer prayers. I wish I could say I have that type of faith, but my prayer life is left wanting and the Lord doesn't know my voice as well as He should. This left me convicted as well. He fasted several times for forty days seeking the Lord on certain issues, and again, it left me searching my heart for more of the dedication and belief that encompassed his life.

I also found his involvement with the famous interesting. Especially his relationship with the likes of Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, but most interesting, Larry Flynt, the founder of Hustler magazine, a porn king in the industry. He was also involved in founding the Moral Majority which later bred the Religious Right. The Moral Majority was a major player in getting Ronald Reagan elected and thus played a role in helping tear down the walls of Communism. But the one trait outside of his faith that I found most admiring was his commitment to his family.

He would leave important meetings to rush home to be with his wife, Macel during storms because she was terrified. He would cancel meetings with the President at the White House to spend a birthday with one of his children. He was totally committed to them and thus, you see his legacy being played out as his sons have stepped in to lead Lierty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church in his passing.

I found myself choked up with tears as I read the last chapter detailing his death and the family's struggles with it. I think whether you liked Jerry Falwell or not, this book is an interesting read. For me, I took much more out of it than simply learning about the life of Jerry Falwell. I found myself being moved by the man even after his death. Thank you Macel, for writing the book. It will remain on my bookshelves as a reminder of what it looks like for a man to live for God and to love His family.

Wonderful, touching story from a loving wife

I just read Macel's book, and I am compelled to write just a little bit about it. Her book is about Jerry and her life with him. It is an oddly connected set of vignettes, lots of chronological mixing, different perspectives and different people -- I guess I would never call it great literature but it does tell a terrific story in a moving manner. I could not put it down until I finished it.
Here is a guy from my area and era and the gal he married. The book tells stories of his imbroglios and accomplishments from a very personal standpoint, but it also includes the "other side" in some instances, such as evidenced by an article by Larry Flynt about his odd relationship with Jerry. There are many different opinions about this guy, but this story is a love story by Macel about her man, and her view is what you would expect. However, through her telling you cannot escape feeling the excitement that must have pervaded every fiber of this man's body, and the boundless energy that drove him to accomplish what few of us would ever dream of! He and his family visited many foreign lands, dined with and entertained countless dignitaries (including Presidents), and Jerry built an enormous university, leaving it debt free when he died! What a fantastic life.
I looked for errors all through the book, but found only one suspect where the word was "from" and I thought it should have been "form", but even that was questionable. Turns out that Macel was an English teacher... Surprise, she graduated from Liberty University!
I recommend this book highly to all those who would like to see the inside story of one of the truly great men of our generation.
