From my experience, review is important, but it is the practice that really improves test scores. The Kaplan Book book has both. The first 25 pages or so deal with the test basics - explaining the format of the SAT Subject test and general test-taking strategies (eat a healthy breakfast, get enough sleep, don't cram, skip over questions you don't know, etc.) Then comes a diagnostic test, followed by the answers and explanations for each question. Next comes the Literature Review part (about 60 pages) - detailing the terms one needs to know and various strategies to use while working with poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and play excerpts. The final part consists of 8 full-length practice exams. Each exam is followed by answers to and explanations for each question. This is what I found to be most helpful in this book. Especially if you have a good amount of time before your exam, it's a good idea to take all eight exams (plus the Diagnostic) and thoroughly go over the answers. The Kaplan Book really helped me; I got a 790 on the test.
