Pentax Scanner and its software easy to use
This
scanner
is extremely easy to use and takes up virtually no space in its spot on the edge of my desk. The software is simple, and no unnecessary junk software is installed during the installation process. The scanner and software work perfectly with Adobe Reader, and the pages scan directly into a ".pdf" file, which is the widely-used Adobe document standard.
It is easy to scan into multiple-page documents with this system. You just put the end of the next page into the scanner and it automatically scans it into the pdf file that it started with the first page. It scans in color, grayscale, or black and white. Resolution defaults to 300 dpi, more than enough to make documents readable, and can be set to up to 600 dpi.
This feed-through style scanner is much better than the huge and clunky flatbed scanners with document feeders that I've used in the past. On those, the document feeders often fail. The only advantage to a flatbad scanner that I can see is that the flatbed allows you to scan books and negatives.
I have successfully scanned photos and fragile papers with this
Pentax
feed-through scanner. There is an option to save the output in ".jpg" format.

Works great!
We purchased two of these
scanner
s about a month ago, and both of them work great. They're very quite, and they scan pretty decently (for portable scanners). Out of the box, both of them scanned a bit lightly in black and white mode, but that was easily corrected by adjusting the contrast. They seem to hold the paper securely while pulling it through. We also have some TravelScan Pro scanners that require a fairly clear outfeed path, otherwise the paper is easily jarred, and the scans come out crooked. That hasn't been much of a problem with the
DSmobile
600. There were a number of ads for the DSmobile 600 that were a bit vague about the included software. Mine came with Presto PageManager 7.16 (a nice improvement over PageManager 6.02). PageManager has a similar look and feel to Paperport. I would definitely recommend this to others.

A bit of work to get it going with my MAC but the scans are great.
With all of the negative reviews about this product and MAC OSX, I was a little concerned. Indeed when I downloaded the drivers, from
Pentax
-- they didn't come with the
scanner
, I had a bit of trouble. I planned to use preview to do scans of my bills and other assorted household paperwork. The first scans were unreadable, almost blank. It turns out preview doesn't use the standard twain scan utility -- from the driver I downloaded. There was no calibration utility built into the dialog box preview uses to do scans. I was concerned it just wasn't going to work with my Mac. Then, just to see if it was preview, I decided to scan the document using photoshop. In this case I got a different scan dialog box -- which had the scanner name in the title. The first time it tried to scan it asked me to calibrate the scanner -- this was progress. Once I did the calibration the scan turned out perfect. I then went back to preview and the scans there were good too. So if you intend to use preview to do your scans, be sure to calibrate it using some other software that uses the twain scanning utility before you use preview. The scanner is absolutely useless before it is calibrated.
Clearly a bit better Mac support and drivers shipped with the device would be nice but other than that it is a great scanner.

Now sad....
I purchased this portable
scanner
about 3 months ago from Antonline.
It worked great for the past 3 months scanning up to 50pages a day, at different times over a 12-hr period.
The document feeder/wheels are barely functioning now, and are making a grinding sound. When they "hang up", the page is distorted to the point of being non-readable.
So...3 months of "five star" and a few days of "zero star". I am really disappointed.
Great light, portable scanner
This is a terrific, light, small
scanner
that it's easy to take on the road. It does a fine job, and my only problem with it is that
Pentax
doesn't include the Mac driver on the enclosed CD, so Mac users have to download it from the Pentax website. Then it works fine, but the software that comes with it for Windows doesn't work on the Mac. Unless you have PhotoShop, for instance (luckily, I do), you're stuck, since you have to scan through a program you already own. That said, it meets my needs fine.
