You can't believe this is Tom Lee Jones

The three Burials of Melquiades Estrada features a pair of maybe the best actors of latest American movies: Tommy Lee Jones who will surprise you here by breaking the law and dancing, he: the righteous FBI agent; and an actor I fell in love with in Saving Private Ryan: lovable Barry Pepper. Both make a Don Quixote and Sancho roles in this full of Spanish world and culture references movie that will be very difficult to follow if you are not familiar with. Even some dialogue in Spanish is present. A very Spanish technique which comes from literature called surrealism is used and also the presence of Death, bodies and images coming from corpses (disturbing ah?) Well, I think no because this movie uses as its main resource humour and some scenes are really funny.

As for people who think Pepper plays the same stereotyped border patrol character, the opposite is true: the character is so humanized since the first scene it is amazing. He is such a good actor I repeat, sorry for that, it is not I am a fan, it is America should be proud of this young man who is not the celebrity type at all: he is a professional actor, just that. The last scenes are superb in particular the one about apologizing and repentance, wow!

All of these influenced by the good script writing which gives the plot a familiarity to some of the "new" movies like 21 Grams or Crash.

Border brilliance

I loved this movie...it will stay with me for a long time. I've recommended it to a lot of people and thought it was a brilliant movie. The characters are 3D and TLJones gives his all in this role. Melquiades's role was extremely evocative. There was humor, shock, savagery, pain, fear, lust, desperation, anger, and so much more...and in such a short amount of time. Very haunting in its premise and theme and can't imagine people that would've left the moviehouse bored! There are no perfect characters, just the human experience totally realized here. Don't overanalyze, just go and see it. The setting is perfect and beautiful. Don't buy the soundtrack, what a waste.

?Que?

I suspect that the chief selling point for the Academy Awards people is that this is a film by TLJ. And it's a good western, but someone have to 'splain me the excitement. I don't get it. A long existential journey during which flashbacks reveal the interconnection, sexual and otherwise, among characters thrown together by circumstance. If you have ANY experience with Existentialism, this IS the story. Always.
For me, the Beckett ending was a let down. Godot would give you more to cheer for. In any case, it's worth watching as it marks the return to film of Levon Helm, and he is absolutely brilliant. He steals this movie and it will be Levon that you remember long after it is done.
The Southwest looks like the Southwest. The cinematography is beautiful, and everyone acquits themselves well, especially Helm and Jones. It's just that it's been done a zillion times since Eastwood, Camus, Sartre.

Mediocre. I wouldn't bother to watch it again.

I watched this film because I heard many good critics, but it proved to be a disappointment. Tommy Lee Jones shows some nice directing tricks in some scenes but the overall result is mediocre and the finale awfully simple and predictable. The director, though, clearly has the potential for something better. May be next time.
