TWILIGHT ZONE-ISH...

This is quite a remarkable film. Really it views like an extended "Twilight Zone" episode: on the razor's edge of reality and surreality.

Someone has suggested the story is a metaphor for Regan era greed and the (de-)evolution of managerial hypercapitalism: this critique is doubly true in the Bush 2 era.

Mamet's ellipitical dialogue is an Hemmingwayesque wonder. Excellent acting all around.

Terrific piece!

This is a work of artistic complexity and it's work to watch. But, don't miss the experience.

Coffee is for Closers

Dark movie about the slippery path people fall down when they have no options. Put a group of real estate scam-artist salesmen in a contest where first prize is a cadillac, 2nd is a set of steak knives, and third is a pre-Trump You're Fired, and then wonder at the depths people will go...

And what a cast! Lemmon is his usual strange mix of sympathetic annoyance. Pacino is the great salesman. Kevin Spacey is strong as the middle manager whose own plight turns into sadism. And Baldwin, he steals the show laying out the Steak knife challenge.

Don't come in expect a classic buddy movie - this is dark, dreary, and never regains the energy of the sales pep talk. But it's not supposed to - that's the point.

A perfect movie. A truthfull face of the world of sales and what happens when your back is against the wall. Jack Lemmon's best performance.
