The Kind of Show Stones Fans Dream About

What other band on the planet could do what the Stones do with Muddy Waters' Champagne & Reefer? This is one of the hottest blues rocks this band has covered in a long time.

Plus the best Stones albums (Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile, Some Girls, & Tattoo You) are well represented. This is the kind of set you want to hear.

Must listens/Favorites: Lovin' Cup, Champagne & Reefer, Faraway Eyes, Just My Imagination, Tumbling Dice, Live With Me (ok Aguilera overdoes it but I think we would be disappointed if she didn't). And Keith's You Got the Silver, Connection and Little T & A.

The critics have been pronouncing this band dead since the early 70's; but these same critics have, on occasion, been silenced by a stunning performance on an inspired night. This is one of those nights and one of those performances.

Mick's southern twang on Faraway Eyes and Keith's soulful strumming on Just My Imagination are enough to make even a music critic smile.

shining lights on R'N'R

Comparing to some Stones' live records released in the 90's ("Flashpoint", "Stripped", "No Security") and even to "Live Licks" (2004), this double CD set seems to be placed on an upper level: quality of recording, energy, feeling with the audience and - basicly - insipiration really make you enjoy the atmosphere of a great rock and roll gig. The Rolling Stones still like to play live on a stage and people feel it!
Apart from soulful Mick Jagger's voice, pay attention to the "game" played by the rhythm guitars (live and loud...), perfectly linked by Chuck Leavell's piano: a R'N'R guide.
Talking about some tracks in detail, CD1 offers a tight Jumping Jack Flash, a square All Down The Line, a fluent Tumbling Dice (a warhorse of Stones' live shows), a romantic Loving Cup, two sweet ballads like My Imagination and Faraway Eyes (with great southern country style vocals) and the duet with Buddy Guy on Champagne & Reefer (pure electric rhythm and blues school). Add some classics from CD2 (Sympathy for the devil, Start Me Up, Brown Sugar and more), and a nice duet with Cristina Aguilera on Live With Me and the cocktail is served.
Some little weak points: apart from his great bluesy voice and his unmistakable guitar riffs, Keith's guitar solos are (rare but) terrible (listen to Sympathy...): why don't they let all solo parts to Ronnie?
More: some people criticize this record because it is a classic Stones' "parade", with the same old songs.
As for me, this is not completely true, because it includes some new entries, like She was hot, You Got the Silver, Connection and more. Anyway, let's wait for the next studio album: "A Bigger Bang" was a nice surprise!
To conclude: maybe this record is not the newest suggestion in R'N'R landscape, but it is certainly a genuine and powerful evidence, with all the best R'N'R' flavours.

The BEST Rolling Stones collection yet.......period

OK, so another collection of Stones songs, but not just any collection....these sonically are unmatched.....if you own every Stones record...buy this one. If this would be your first Stones CD...buy this one....Kids like the Disney artists? Buy this one....The only other release that got me this interested in the sheer impact of the songs was the new release by the band Vallejo....they remind me of the Stones energy and the Thicker Than Water CD they just put out is their best, no question.

Shine A Light

I know, another live Stones cd...but they sound better every time out, so who cares? The band is super tight, you can actually picture Mick struttin around...guests Jack White and Buddy Guy are smokin...the Stones rule!

Stones Roll Out a Disappointment

I'm a bit baffled by the huge number of stellar reviews I've read for this. I love the Stones as much as anybody, but this album is just NOT very good. The choice of tracks is superb though. "Some Girls," "She Was Hot," "You Got The Silver," songs we haven't heard on a live album yet. Every Stones show has high points, but this soundtrack has some real low points. Keith's playing is just not at it's peak. Most of his solos sound the same and some of them are quite weak (She Was Hot, I'm Free). His singing is another story. "You Got The Silver" is always great to hear, as it is such a great song, but Keith's delivery is not top notch here. He struggles a bit with the lyrics and his vocals get very ragged at times. He also sounds like he was intoxicated as well. Little T&A is a near disaster. Connection isn't bad for the most part, but again there are some real rough spots vocally. Kinda hard to listen to. Mick sounds flat at times, partly because he just can't get it out like he used to, but he's done better on this tour. Aguilera's duet is quite good, but the choice of Jack Black for "Loving Cup" was not a good one. This would've been better suited for a country singer, preferably female, in my opinion. We get good versions of SMU, PIB, TD, Shattered and Satisfaction up until the ill-advised addition of horns at the end (ick!). Paint It Black is stellar, Some Girls has always been a favorite and is played quite well here, and most of the "new" additions are pulled off pretty well. I thought the high point of the soundtrack was "Champagne & Reefer" with Buddy Guy. Buddy's howling vocals and shout outs to Mick and Keith are classic (I wanna get high this mornin', Mick!) . To sum it up the high points aren't as high and there are almost as many low points on this soundtrack. Hopefully the film will be a different story.
