GET IT OVER AND DONE WITH DICK!
Aaah, Rachel Ward! What was that imbecile of a priest thinking? When I first watched this mini-series, I kept shouting at Ralph for his inexplicable reluctance to give in to his passion for Meggie. But I was 16 when I first watched it, and consumed bu hormones. Now I realise what crushung torment is, and not what I thought was idoicy! The acting is superb, especially from Barbra Stynwyck. Her role as Mary Carson, whose bitter hatred causes diastrous consequences for Ralph and Meggie, is a testament to her greatness as an actress. Jean Simmons in her role as Meggie's mother Fee is also to be strongly applauded, as too the actor playing her illegtimate child Frank. I would also recommend buying the soundtrack of "The
Thorn
Birds
". "Meggie's Theme" will haunt you, much as Meggie herself haunted Ralph, even from across the globe, amidst the splendours of the Vatican City.

Meggie really should've read the book 'He's Just Not That Into You'
I am really late to the party -- although this
miniseries
was aired in 1983, I finish watching it just now. I love the story, however I can't help thinking that both Ralph and Meggie are very clueless. *spoiler* Ralph, make up your mind. Which one do you want? The Church or the woman? If you do want to serve God, don't keep coming back to the woman and make her heartbroken and confused.
The same goes to Meggie. Had she known of the book 'He's Just Not That Into You', she would've left Ralph long ago.
But without the drama, it wouldn't be a good story, would it?

The Thorn Birds
I forgot how much I enjoyed this the first time; it's wonderful!
Good Mini Series-BUT....
Thorn
Birds
was such a BIG mini-series back in 1982 As many of us probably were I remember sitting night after night watching waiting to see what happens next.
Richard Chamberlain (Ralph) and Rachel Ward (Meggie) were wonderful together as far as their chemistry. The story was rather controversial for it's time-a priest giving in to his fleshly desires for a woman.
The one thing that is disappointing is I didn't know whether to think that they were subtle undertones of challenging the Catholic Church and it's views on celibacy or whether it was up to the viewer to decide what they thought. Truthfully I think it is the latter and for my part that's my only beef with this movie.
The Bible talks about it being better to marry than to burn with desire. I believe that God calls some people to celibacy but in my opinion Ralph de Briccasart should have thought about converting to a Protestant because then he could have married Meggie and still been a minister. Silly thought perhaps but I guess if the story went this route we wouldn't have a steamy epic.
Watch it and see what you think. Barbara Stanwyck deserved the Emmy she won in her role as Mary Carson, the aunt who burned with love for Ralph.
Interesting note: Bryan Brown who plays Luke O'Neill who marries Meggie (Rachel Ward) in the film actually ended up marrying her in real life a year later in 1983. They've been married ever since.
