Her best yet
I can't believe that I waited to get this
book
from my local library rather than buying it, like I have all of the others. I had been disappointed in the last couple of books. I came away intending to reread the series from start to finish, and I'll definitely be buying this book!
So much happened, and has been covered in other reviews, but to me, the most titanic shift is the change in the relationship between Al and
Rachel
, and in her view of him. I can't say much without giving too much away, but the last chapter provided a stark change in their relationship. Evil Al, who tormented Ceri so badly? Just - wow.
Equally as astounding and satisfying was the final fleshing out of Rachel's mother, who turned out to be even more delightful and talented as her daughter.
Frankly, I've been a little bored with the whole Ivy/Rachel thing, and I hope sincerely that this whole blood balance thing will permanently go away. I have hopes that eventually Ivy will become a fully fleshed out character. She's never really come alive for me.
Incidentally, I found the ex-President vampire to be a pretty sinister figure. I can hardly wait for the next book!

Kim Harrison
The
book
is fast moving, fun, exciting, and very enjoy able. Can't wait for the next one.
Simply irresistible
Kudos to Kim Harrison! She has done amazing things in this
book
. If you have been following this series (and what kind of dweeb starts with Book Six ??) Congratulations, sport! You just won the lottery (not really ...) BUT you are in for a treat when you start this reading this one. (Warning - once you start- be prepared to put your everyday life on hold until you finish reading the last page.) I finally finished about 6 AM. Yes - Even though I needed mondo coffee and toothpicks to keep my eyes open in afternoon clinic. It was worth it.
The old gang is all here, but a few new characters like Bis the gargoyle insinuate themselves effortlessly into the roiling, fast paced narrative with entertaining results. The Harrison signature oddball off-beat humor and interesting character insights are here in spades. We learn more about Trent, Ceri, Quen and yes-even Takada! She has developed her characters and propelled her plot with unexpected changes and some really harrowing moments. Short summary you will love it. So? What are you waiting for? Exposition Hell
This
book
has a lot going for it in about the last third of the book. We meet
Rachel
's mom and discover a secret she's been keeping. We discover secrets about Ceri. We get to watch a mission to the
demon
realm that results in some really great complications for later books.
But those beginning and middle sections, could we please get an editor to take out all the endless exposition? Now, I know that some exposition is needed for people who decide that they're going to start reading a series in the middle; however, despite having a great opportunity to give us exposition in the form of a new regular character, Harrison spends most of her time telling rather than showing us what's happened in the past five books, including all the werewolf stuff that happened in book four but is totally irrelevant to the plot of this book. There was no reason to explain some of this stuff. In some cases she gives us the same exposition twice, as if I've forgotten it in the last 75 pages. Did she switch editors? There are some technical mistakes that I don't remember from earlier books, which makes me suspicious that this is the case.
I'm disappointed, not because Harrison's creative spark is gone, but because her style is now sufficating under the weight of its own backstory if she keeps up this level of exposition.
