The plot sounded interesting enough, even if a bit cliche -- a woman delivers two babies, one of which is diagnosed by its doctor-father as having Down synrdome and is "thrown away," but a friendly nurse intercedes and takes the babe under her wing. Ta da. I, like most readers I imagine, thought this plot had tons of potential to take me somewhere emotionally stimulating. I was greatly dissapointed. I truged to page 150 but collapsed before I could finish.
The author makes awkward attempts at being poetic, all the while centering around characters who are one-dimensional and hardly likeable. Ugh, boring. Bring me charactes I can fall in love with, because there's definitely none of that going on here. In fact, the characters flat-out annoyed me; even little Phoebe, who is empty and over-idolized. Kim Edwards writes like she has the potential to compose something interesting (with a little more work,) but that something is nothing close to this book! I'm hard on my books. So get this: I've got to pick one to place under my laptop to hold it up, so that it doesn't overheat, and of all the books stored on my nightstand, well, this one gets the grab every time. Sorry, Edwards.
Seriously, though, it's not THAT bad...it may be perfectly readable for people who are at the stage of their reading walk that's in between chick-lit and literature. But if you like the
daughter
-parent struggle, pick up Diane Chamberlain's "The Courage Tree" instead.
I've gone ahead and given this book two stars because hey, it isn't the WORST book in the WORLD...

Not worth reading...
There were many good reviews about this book when I bought it. Looking at the cover, the story seem fairly interesting so I started to read. What a mistake.
It was boring in the beginning. I like to finish what I started to I told myself that it probably will get better as I read more into it. I've read up to 190 pages and throughout my reading, my mind was empty. It just wasn't worth it for me to keep reading; it's just not interesting at all for me and took my valuable reading time.
Let me explain why it was so boring for me. First, the writing style seemed like a high school student writing, trying to fill the novel with descriptions. There were way too much unnecessary descriptive passages. I'm sure the whole book could've been written 1/3 of the current length.
Next, the characters are just plain flat. I might even say they're just a line, a dot or a point. To me, there was no dimensions of characters. In addition, many of the characters' behavior and thoughts were irrelevant; it was leading no where & useless.
However, I can see that some people may like & enjoy this book. My guess is the romantic & poetic people.
I've read boring yet interesting book (The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America) which was thick with history yet I enjoyed it to some degree. This book is just plain boredom; no interesting character or plot or setting. There is one another book that I tried to read many times yet could not finish: Moby Dick. To me, this book is comparable to Moby Dick, perhaps worse.
Read other reviews and make wise decision. If you really want to read it, go ahead and find out for yourself; you might actually like it.
