Interesting and Enlightening
This is an interesting true story of a girl who was slipped a drug. Her story was sad. I was hoping for a happy ending. I did learn a lot of interesting facts about drugs that I did not know.
Go Ask Alice
Do you have any Questions?
Have you ever kept a diary before? Well I sure have, but I've only been able to keep it for at the most 3 days. The book Go
Ask
Alice
is a diary written by an unknown person. The main character is Alice, and she does keep a diary for more than 3 days. In fact she records her thought in it for a little more than a year.
Alice's diary is what keeps her alive as she copes wither drug addiction. She records her thoughts and concerns about her uncertain future, and the lack of lover she receives from her mom. Alice and her grandparents have a very close relationship and that is where she feels she can be herself and express her feelings. That is why when they pass away everything spirals out of control.
Go Ask Alice is one of the best books I have ever read. You really shouldn't judge a diary, but if I had to I would give it 10 out of 10. Once you open the book it captures you in a sense that you won't be able to put the book down until the very last word. I would recommend this book to people the ages of 13 and older. It's a very descriptive book and can be a little scary at times. Go Ask Alice is one of those books that you will never be able to forget. Well, al least I didn't

Great Read!
: At first when I began to read this book I actually thought it was going to be a very slow read. After about twenty pages in is when the story begins to get interesting. This contemporary realistic fiction story is written as a first person account that is formatted as a journal as opposed to a narrative. It is completely relevant to high - school students who are just experimenting with sex, drugs, and unknown things they have never tried before. At times I believe that the story could be very offensive to some, because of the graphic nature of the drug and sex scenarios that the main character got herself into. The characters that were portrayed in this story were mainly minor characters as opposed to the main character, who was the fifteen year old girl who is narrating the story. She was full of drama, excitement, and uncertainty and she always left you guessing because she was so spontaneous. The journeys that she took you on were exciting and she would be so drugged up you were almost afraid to read on to find out if she killed herself or not. Her life to an extent when she was sober was that of your average middle class suburban kid, but when she was on a binge she was that of an ordinary druggie who will do anything to get high. It is a sad but very real issue that teenagers deal with today. There were no illustrations with in this book, but the excitement and interest of this book is easily kept thorough out the novel. I believe that high school juniors and seniors would benefit from this novel, but I don't think it is appropriate for anyone younger because of some of the graphic nature in this book. There are many social issues that can be addressed with this book that students can easily relate to and acknowledge in the classroom; especially if they can't be addressed at home. I would strongly recommend this book to any high school English teacher because I believe a lot of students not only can learn something from this but also relate to the overall message of the book.

I would ask Alice
I found this old paperback on in our garage when I was a kid. It was a left over book of my mom's. I had this one great summer when I was 11 where I decided to read more grown up books, and my mom let me delve into as many as I wanted. I read "Of Mice and Men", and more. Today, I still have my mom's original copy of Go
ask
Alice
, torn, crumpled, thumbed, on my own book shelf.
It's a story of a young girl who falls into the dark world of drugs, and disappears from her family's grasp.
I think it's an important book for young girls to read, and remeber the times I read it well, and remember being touched by it each time.
I can't relate to it, can't tell you if it's factual- I never used drugs, but I can tell you that all young girls have that fragile, vulnerable turning point where you tend to stray or depart who you are unexpectedly.
This poignant story captures those feelings.

NOT a real diary!
Although I would agree with the editorial comments about this book being a gripping tale of the dangers of casual drug use, I must disagree with the claim that this book was a real diary.
For one what teenager uses the vocabulary
Alice
uses in this "diary"?? I wish I had a copy here to quote some of the lines, but unfortunately I've already returned it. I teach high school and even my brightest kids would NEVER use this language even in their formal writing, much less in a personal diary. Perhaps it is evidence of the "dumbing down" of America in this day and age??
Secondly, what person that is strung out on drugs is going to remember to write in their in diary--especially when they are alone on the streets. I know it said the entries were written on paper sacks and what not, but come on. I don't believe that for a minute. Even if she did manage to get her thoughts down on a paper sack, would she also be responsible enough to keep the sack with her from place to place and get it back home?? I highly doubt it. Again, as a teacher I have many kids who cannot remember their pencils each day for class.
Lastly I also want to point out the very suspect scenario of the other kids hassling her about using. Why would these dopeheads bother harassing her when they could have just moved on to an easier target??
I will say that the book was a page turner, albeit unrealistic. I just decided to look at it as fiction--and a lesson on seventies slang:)
