This album is great!
Okay, even if I wanted to hate this album, I could not. There is no doubt in my mind that the Leto Brothers and company have talent. I would be playing the hater if I said Jared could not sing or if I said Jared only made it because he is an actor. No, without a doubt this album has more potential than I thought. The more I listen to it, the more hyped I get. For one thing, obviously the lyrics are intelligent, emotional and thought provoking. Somehow I can't see this band trashing a hotel room, they seem to have much more going on upstairs than outside appearances may warrant. There are shades of the Cure and U2 on this album and that was cool with me. There are so many things to like about this album, Jared Leto being
beautiful
was the last thought on my mind. Okay, I was blown away when I read the thank you notes inside and what could I do but swoon even more when a man can say he would like to thank Jesus the Christ, Buddha, C.S. Lewis, Deepak Chopra, the Seraphim and the Nephilim to name a few...deep Jared very deep. Deep and gorgeous...a girl just can't ask for more. And to cover a Bjork song and not botch it up...BRAVO!
30 Seconds to Mars is a trip worth taking, these guys can rock!

One of the Year's Best
If you are not sure weather to spend your hard earned dollars on this cd...think no longer and buy it. If you are a fan of metal and a slight electronic sound mixed together WELL, this is for you. I bought this around five months after hearing their first single, and was no where near disappointed. I love all rock music, and this is one of the best albums I own. Its different and refreshing to hear after hearing so much rap and punk rock and hip hop that clogs the radio channels.
Attack: Amazing song with really a really powerful chourus.
Beautiful
Lie
: Never heard anything like this before, its awesome.
The Kill: Their biggest song right now, and if you havent seen the video, then see it.
Was it a dream?: More of a ballad with no screaming, still good.
Fantasy: Probably the best song on here next to Attack and From Yesterday.
Savior: One of the best songs I've ever heard.
From Yesterday: While this song is maybe the best song on here, U2 fans will be very mad...(The Streets have no name INTRO anyone??)
The Story: Another new sound, really good song
R-Evolve: you will find yourself randomly humming this song if you hear it a few times. Real catchy.
A modern myth: The acoustic song, real good, kind of short but its still sweet.
Bonus tracks include a remake of some bjork song called hunter.
A battle of one: Even though its really short, its pretty intense.
YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU BOUGHT THIS ALBUM!

Well, I tried not liking it...
I honestly didn't want to like this album. Saw them live and got turned off. I did however like Attack and that kept me interested. Despite me not wanting to like this album I kept coming back for more. I finally bought the album which suprised me, and even after owning it for some time I still keep listening to it regularly. For lack of a better term, it got under my skin. Some of the songs are incredibly addicting and you just keep coming back and back to hear them again. It's strange how I actually didn't want to like it, but after awhile it really just clicked with me. So don't let any pre-concieved notions keep you away from listening and enjoying this album. It is QUITE GOOD. It has an incredible atmosphere to it. I think someone else mentioned "spacey", and I think thats a good term for it. Very spacey atmosphere when you listen to it. "Was it a dream?" is a good example of this. Anyways, give this album a shot, it really surprised me and become one of my most listened too albums of 2006. I can't wait to see what they come out with next.

He's multi-talented.
So, the incredibly gifted actor Jared Leto has proven to be a pretty decent musician as well. With their second album, "A
Beautiful
Lie
", 30 Seconds to Mars have further streamlined their sound without going too commercial (well, not commercial in a bad way, anyway). Furthermore, they have maintained a pretty distinctive sound, blending raw, earnest alt. metal with a dash of electronic, and a healthy dose of progressive rock. All in all, it makes for a pretty solid listen. Jared's vocals are raw and emotive, and his brother Shannon is a powerful, creative drummer (almost like a young Neil Peart, dare I say).
This album is full of excellent tracks, such as "Attack", "The Story", "The Fantasy", "Savior", and the nice acoustic closer "A Modern Myth", but my fave of the bunch is definitely "From Yesterday". In fact, this has become one of my favorite songs of late. It really boggles the mind that the guy who put on the amazing performance in "Requiem for a Dream" also wrote this fantastic song. Makes me wonder what other hidden talents this guy has (he can probably knit a mean sweater as well).
There are a few dud tracks, however, namely the two bonus tracks tacked onto the end. "The Hunter", in particular, is pretty skippable, sounding like a really bad Deftones impersonation. But otherwise, this album is pretty damn good. I'm very interested in hearing what the future holds for Mr. Leto and the rest.
(Oh, and my copy doesn't have copyright protection. Not that I would think of, um, doing such things, of course...)

"Interesting" is a good word to describe it
I can't say Jared Leto failed me in the acting world. His roles in Lord of War and Requiem for A Dream were excellently done. However, this review isn't of Leto. Most actors and actresses make forays into music and create sub par albums and achieve following in other countries (David Hasselhof for instance). A
Beautiful
Lie
is the first album I've heard from 30 Seconds to Mars and I can safely say I don't believe them to be sub par. Leto's singing is quite good and ranges from angry and loud to haunting and soft. The band musically ranges from hard rock in "The Fantasy," to incorporating violins and acoustic guitars in the ballad-esque "A Modern Myth." I think their musical depth and creativity are key points in why I keep coming back to this album. I'd recommend this album to anyone who is looking for a bit of something different, maybe to change up their musical rotation.
