No Reservations indeed. . . .

"No Reservations" is excellent behind-the-scenes glimpse at food-and-beverage business and an excellent movie. The pressures of keeping the service, quality of food and the customers pleased is brief but real. Smooth operation of the every day of a restaurant is dictated by the staff on duty at that moment. The dialogue. plot, action, and acting did present that "movie" feel but a real-life sensation.

So-So Romantic-Comedy/Chick Flick

I've seen better romantic comedies/chick flick then this one. This movie was billed as a romantic-comedy, but wasn't very comedic as it deals with death/loss/grief and other life issues. Overall this movie is predictable, which made it both boring and slow. Also, Catherine Zeta-Jones character is pretty flat and one dimensional.... I think there could have been more substance overall in the storyline to make this a better movie.

better than I thought

Unlike some romantic comedies, this movie has some depth to it. The female lead is flawed, and remains so throughout the film, but that doesn't prevent her character from growing enough to move the plot forward. Her neice, likewise, undergoes reactions to her mother's death and her new circumstances that are more realistic than some other films that use a newly-orpaned kid as a prop. Eckhart's character might be a little too long-suffering to believe, but he has an understated charm that is infectious - I tried hard not to like him. This type of movie might not be my preference, but I enjoyed it.

No reservations....

Hmmmm....I went to see this movie at the movies because of its rating. Big mistake. The language was a bit off for a pg rating! The romance just wasn't there. It was a silly movie with no depth. What were the characters thinking? It just felt like they threw this movie together. I think it could have been WAY better.

As Exciting as Broccoli

Even though I'm a normal guy, I'm not a reflexive chick-flick hater. Although most are unbearable, a few movies of that genre actually have engaging storylines, humor, likeable characters and portray men as something more than one-dimensional props who say and do abjectly ridiculous things we would never do in real life. "No Reservations" is not one of those enjoyable chick-flicks, although it's not one of the worst. In fact, in pretty much every way, it's a bland, neutral toned, one-note, white bread, middle of the road, droning hum of a movie- not a disaster, but not very interesting either. There is zero humor, no volcanic conflicts, no earth-shaking passion, no irresistible attraction. What you have to entertain you for an hour and a half is watching a developing relationship between two ordinary, boring people (the male lead is considered "zany" because he listens to opera) whose romance is temporarily disturbed by a minor misunderstanding towards the end of the movie. Muzak-fans will love it.
