True Romance is a perfect mix of wicked violence and amusement.
This is really a masterpiece. A violent masterpiece, yes, but a masterpiece nonetheless. Christian Slater must look back on this film with a sense of longing because he has not been given as good a project since (Churchill: The Hollywood Years, anyone?). Many people brand this movie as a narcissistic teenage boy's wet dream. Well it's not. This is supposed to be a "fairy tale" I mean he's a film geek and she's a hot girl. Well it turns out this hot girl likes movies and comics to so they get married. Tarantino didn't set out to make a fairy tale when he wrote it but the changes that Tony Scott made (as small as they were) really changed the theme of the movie and made it lighter and more like a fairy tale.
Patricia Arquette acted out really well in this film and the role perfectly fit her. Call me crazy, but she really seems to be enjoying playing the "hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold". In fact, everyone seems to be loving the hell out of that script. The scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken is one of cinemas greatest ever scenes! The famously egotistical Val Kilmer goes almost unseen as Elvis - sorry, The Mentor - and Brad Pitts Cleaning Products line was a brilliant ad-lib. Gary Oldman as the white-rasta Drexl is the epitome of nastiness. Even Samuel L Jackson gets a high billing in the credits, but is in the film for less than 5 minutes! Genius.
What more can I say, this is a collection of brilliantly written scenes, filled with memorable quotes and held together by a sweet, believable and totally mad storyline with a better-than-A-list-cast. Even the tragically underused Ed Lauter gets a look-in. Tom Sizemore and Chris Penn excel as the cops on the trail. The weakest point is Bronson Pinchot, but even he keeps pace well.
Scott did an EXCELLENT job, but I would like to see QT's version. If you like your movies fast, mean and outrageously raw you'll have a blast with this one.

The Perfect Action Movie
There is a long list a stars in the movie. Which by precedent already would give any movie a nod in the wrong direction which spiral this to be a loose plot, simplified action and text book
romance
sequences. - But not this time.
"
True
Romance" may very well be in the top ten of greatest action films of all time ranging in the same category as such classics as "Leon: The Professional, John Woo's The Killer, The Matrix" and so on.
Christian Slater plays his role of a down and out comic book salesman and kung fu movie lover fantastically as he celebrates his birthday alone by getting a beer and going to the movies.
In walks Patricia Arquette who instantly ignites passion and clicks through to Christian's true character. They experience their first night together and are immediately in love - hense True Romance.
Before the mobster storyline takes place, you really appreciate these
two
people who in the whole mess of life and experiences, find true romance between each other and make anyone who watches this wish they could have such a love in their life.
From beginning to end you are entranced in first the wonderful dialogue that Christian and Patricia exchange and follow up with hitting the road, then as you are beginning to settle in the love story, in crashes Christopher Walken as a head mobster and rolls out with co-star Dennis Hopper once the most brutal but spectacular scenes in film history (you will know when you see it).
The performances are splendid by all, and the extreme violence make this Bonnie and Clyde type of movie all the more enjoyable.
This two-
disc
edition
of True Romance is a must have for anyone. Even if you haven't seen this, I suggest you just purchase it right away so you won't have to waste time renting it. Beleive me, you'll want to give this a few viewings!
The only thing I did not like about this
director
's
cut
, but can still be seen elsewhere in the disc set, are the deleted scenes. This is the rare movie in which all the scenes that were deleted, should have actually remained in the movie. I would enjoyed "True Romance" just that much more if Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino spliced the deleted scenes back in.
Other than that, this remains a classic on the all levels. Superb.

finally a "true" movie
I rememebr seeing this when I was like 10 years old. I am still amazed I sat through a 2 hour movie at that age and now I can see why I did. Action.
Btu now after viewing this a second time, I am now convinced this is one of the greatest ever. I have my problems with this movie like all others but they are so minor, it would be stupid to dwell on them.
My friend told me to watch this becasue he claimed that slater's character is me, he was wrong. Every character is me. This should be an inspiration for anyone looking to write or even make movies one day. The way EVERY character has something that we get to explore, even if it is just a tad, we still get a sense of who they are. They don't just throw in a major character and not explain him. Even Pitt's stoner character was pretty well explained.
Basically I am doing too much rambling because it would easily be the longest review ever if I shared all my thoughts. But this is why you don't just give every movie 5 stars here, cause a flick like this comes along and you really have to think about all your past reviews. No thinkin on this one, I am a kung fu movie fan, and I certainly got what I wanted. Btw-you people do know this is a fu movie, right? I didn't hear any hi-ya's, but they beautifully captured the spirit of a old school kung fu flick on this one.
I will tell yuo what I was told 2 days ago by 3 other people, "you are an idiot if you watch any movie before this one", oh god were they right.
Btw- I know I didn't talk abou the actual movie, that is because it is magnificent, and I can't allow myself to spoil a second for you. All the other reviewers are dead on with their 5 stars, now click on the new and used section, there ya go...
Also the version I am reviewing is the widescreened one
disc
unrated version with no
special
features. Good enough for me.
-CAN'T BELIEVE I HAEV TO FREAKING EDIT THIS-
To the reviewer above me, how the hell is this a 4 star movie. You had better nto tell me that reservoir dogs, jackie brown, or pulp fiction are better than this. Cause they are absolutely shlt compared to this flick.

True Romance (Unrated Director's Cut 2 Disc Special Edition)
This a great movie, C. Slater has a great role and does a fantastic job. C. Walken, J. Gandolfini, B. Pitt, V. Kilmer and the rest of the cast with the writing of Q. Tarantino makes this DVD "A Guy's Romantic Movie".
Insanely violent prequel to "Pulp Fiction"
Spawned from the bizarre mind of Quentin Tarantino "
True
Romance
" continues his line of ultra violent, outlandish movies starting with "Resevoir Dogs".
Christian Slater playing Clarence Worley, a comic book store employee is set up with a new to the profession call girl Alabama played by a very sexy Patricia Arquette as a birthday present. They quickly get married and Slater wants to sever her ties with her scarfaced and dreadlocked pimp Drexl Spivey played by Gary Oldman. He proceeds to gun him down and inadvertantly takes a suitcase filled with millions worth of cocaine thinking it was Arquette's clothes.
Amazed at his good fortune they plan to go to L.A. to sell the coke and live happily ever after. Unfortunately the organized crime owners of the drugs led by Mafia don Vincenzo Coccotti played by the always peculiar Christopher Walken have other plans.
The film with a terrific cast including Dennis Hopper, James Gandolfini, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson and others proceeds frantically culminating in a furious gun battle in a Beverly Hills hotel. Narcotic detectives, Mafia hitmen, Hollywood bodyguards and Slater and his crew all shoot it out in a bloody finale which proves that love conquers all.
