Bet your sweet Bippie---Butter Battle is the Best!

This one was recommended by a friend who is also an "older" kid at heart when I told him The Lorax is my favorite Seuss book. Makes a great gift for a kid or a kid at heart. And who can beat the great Seuss illustrations!

Butter Battle Book Review

The Butter Battle Book, written by Dr. Seuss is an exellent display of his own thoughts on the nuclear war. This book helps inform young audiences about our nation's history in a way that they can understand. Although this is a childen's book, it is great reading for all agaes, and really hits home for those who have memories of the Cold War. The disagreement between the Yooks and the Zooks expresses how they both think bread should be buttered. One "butter-side up" and the other "butter-side down." The controversey, turning into a battle shows Dr. Seuss' dislike for generic disputes. The Yooks and the Zooks hurry to develop more powerful weapons, until; both groups take it to an extreme. The underlying theme to the book is the absuridity of battle. Dr. Seuss tries to convey that people must overcome their pride to live in peace. Memories of the Cold War like the wall dividing the Yooks and Zooks add to the realistic element to The Butter Battle Book.

The Butter Battle Book review

...The butter battle book is funny, interesting and fun too read. It is a great book by Dr. Seuss about Yooks and Zooks. Yooks eat buttered bread with the butter side up. Zooks eat buttered bread with the butter side down. There is a big wall in the middle of their land to separate the Yooks from the Zooks.

The first sentence of the book is, "On the last day of summer, ten hours before fall...my grandfather took me out to the wall." In the middle of the book the big machines battle. At the end of the grandpa gets an egg!!!

Why did the grandpa get an egg? Read the book to find out. You will love it.

The Butter Battle Book

Dr. Suess' Butter Battle Book is a tale of two cultures, defined by how they butter bread. This difference is the basis for an escalation of weapons which seems to be very consistent with the Cold War. The lessons of the book, ones of intollerance and mutual destruction are good ones but not for the 4 to 8 year olds that this book is said to be aimed at. At higher grade levels this book would provide a great basis for discussion of a wide range topics from cultural tolerance to an arms race. At the early reading level the story is difficult to understand and leaves kids with an feeling of uneasiness, which of course is the intention, but one that is not necessarily good for the the K-2 reader.
