excellent

the media is an amazing thing that i don't think we fully understand in society. here's a show that gripped a nation, yet was rigged, as seems to be Survivor today, but we forgave them because we loved what they showed. this movie looks well into the quiz shows of the 1950s, while trying to show that even though there was a big scandal, it continued on, even to this day. could have survivor been rigged? do we really care?

Television's Going to Get Us!

"I thought we were gonna get television," says Rob Morrow's character, the investigator Goodwin, "truth is, television's gonna get us!" That line sums up so much about the film's outlook. This story, with great liberties to historic fact, still presents a compelling look at the quiz show scandals of the 1950's. While "The $64,000 Question" and "Dotto" are never mentioned, the basic tale of Charles Van Doren, Herb Stempel, Dan Enright, and Albert Freedman presents a very compelling case study in why good, honest people do dishonest things, and their rationalization behind it. Even as the film's credits are rolling, you'll hear Enright remain unrepentant, and insist their problem was they were just too successful at what they were doing, hence the attack on their "Twenty-One." The viewer should know that the Van Doren-Stempel clash was, in truth, stretched out for several weeks, and it was a few years after Van Doren's defeat that the truth of the fix was finally revealed. (Also, Enright tells Van Doren in this film that Dwight Eisenhower didn't write "Crusade In Europe." Students of Eisenhower can attest to the fact that Ike most certainly did author "Crusade In Europe" and it was not ghost-written.) This film, and "Network" are probably two of the most important films about the broadcasting industry you can find. Both do a very good job of telling the audience what the industry thinks of them, which isn't, at the end of the day, very much.

Intelligent Movie

Quiz Show and Schindler's List are Ralph Fiennes' best roles. All his subsequent movies are just a rehash of the tormented adulterer from The English Patient. The entire cast does a superb job of showing us what makes their characters tick. The story itself is an interesting look at how the early television industry developed. A must-see.

Fabulous

This movie is fantastic. The casting is wonderful (Ralph Fiennes, John Turturro, Paul Schoefield) and I was very impressed with how the movie dealt with the personal issues surrounding historical events. I expected to watch a bland movie, but was surprised by how interesting it was.

Good

This is a well-crafted film. It did not do well, and Redford whined that the American public wasn't ready to face their loss of innocence. Blaming the public for the failure of a movie is a cop out. Redford is at fault. He himself said, "I wanted the first half of the movie to move quickly, like television itself. Then the second half I wanted to have a slower pace." A basic rule of movie narrative is the ONLY time you can be leisurely is at the beginning, and toward the end you really have to pick up the pace. I truly believe Redford's choice to slow the movie down in the second half is why it failed. Rob Morrow's awful acting job doesn't help. But aside from those major caveats, this film is intelligent, well-written, the other performances are first-rate, and it's worth a look.
