outstanding

i always feel like jodi picoults books topics are going to turn out to be boring, but im always surprised that i take interest to them and finish them literally in two days because i cannot put the book down. this book was amazing i think with a twist torwards the end that changes the readers whole perspective on the main character. my favorite view points were the chapters of Lucius, and Maggie. I love how the author questions religion and really makes you think and re-evaluate your own beliefs. one of her best books yet i think. really blew me away when i was finished.

Excellent and creative

Jody has done it again, another unique set of characters and a plot that makes you think about many things. I feel like I am a better, deeper person from reading it.

Good Enough

I have read better by Mrs. Picoult but this was good enough for me. A real page turner with interesting characters. It kept me guessing all the way to the end and speaking of the ending, a real good one!! It left me wanting more!!! I would recommend you read this book.

--Gerard, husband of author of "My Funny Dad, Harry"

Far Fetched

This book moved much slower than the others I read by her. I was a bit disappointed in this one. It was very philosophical about Shay, a convicted murderer, sentenced to death. The priest who was his spiritual adviser while he was on death row was a member of the jury that found him guilty. His only concern while on death row was that he be able to donate his heart to the victim's sister once he heard she needed a heart transplant. It was a strange book with religious undercurrents and far out "miracles." I had to really work my way through this one, but it did get better near the end and had a "happy ending," well, sort of. It was a great finish! No peeking!!!

Distracting Editing Errors Mar a Typical Picoult Story

Perhaps Picoult writes too quickly. Perhaps her editors aren't reading closely. I can't help close-reading, and picked up on several inconsistencies in characterization. For instance, at one point Father Michael ruminates on how Catholicism has always been part of his life, recalling his grandparents' take on the matter. Later, he tells Shay that "I didn't even go to church until after I served on the jury" (251).

Verb-tense agreement problems occurred in multiple areas, and the characters seemed stock, rather than fleshed-out. If the author had taken more time to fully know her characters, and to help us know them, the book would have been more riveting and moving (not that I didn't cry, but that I was surprised that I did, after the book had been so easy to set on the nightstand each evening).

I'm a fan. I like the multiple-perspective narrative Picoult uses. I am impressed by her insight, and her ability to marry mass-market ideas with loftier expression and depth. The last two books, however, have not been as strong.
