A Remarkable Read
For Christmas, my mother gave me a copy of Clarence Thomas' 2007 289-page autobiography "My
Grandfather
's
Son
". It has proven to be a remarkable read!
Judge Thomas' life is an extraordinary from "poverty to pinnacle" story. Growing up in his grandparents impoverished home, with their southern moral temperament, young Thomas aspired to better himself and his peers' condition. Wracked with by lifetime of self-guilt, personal foreboding, other's prejudice, national racism, and other's hatred, he persevered to the highest levels of the American judiciary. His inspiring spiritual journey, away from religion later to return, to God is poignant and alone is worth the price of this book!
In this book Justice Thomas set the record straight about his years at the EEOC, the DC Circuit Court, and his Supreme Court confirmation hearings. He refutes Anita Hill's misguided attempt to besmirch him. He tells the truth about senatorial backsliding and backbiting. And he reminds that religious faith is always the cornerstone for powerful living.
Thomas' 13-year (1969 to 1982) walk from "angry black man" to "black conservative" is informative and convincing. His opposition to abortion, desegregation, big government, and government welfare are thoroughly reviewed. By the late 1970s his frustration with the Democrat Party caused his severance from social liberalism. He entered US Supreme Court life (a conservative, in 1991) as one dedicated to making America better for everyone.
This remarkable story is recommended to everyone wondering about Clarence Thomas, late 20th century Washington DC politics, or the power of personal religious faith.

A good man
I loved the book. This is a man who has been vilified by the press just because he is a black conservative. My image of Justice Thomas from seeing him on TV during his confirmation hearings and during the 2000 elections was completely wrong. He frankly appeared to be a dim bulb. After hearing him speak, meeting him, and reading his book, my opinion has completely changed. He is intelligent, witty, warm, and engaging. The book is a touching story of family sacrifice and dedication...and ultimately appreciation for that from Justice Thomas.
Well-written, inspiring and entertaining!
Justice Thomas does a fantastic job of describing his growing up in the segregated south, overcoming many obstacles and eventually reaching the high court. Some claim that this book is self-serving (isn't every autobiography?), but Justice Thomas does reveal some of his dark past, including a failed marriage, drinking problems and family struggles. His story is truly inspiring and is a must-read for anyone who believes that their "situation" will prevent them from reaching success.

Amazingly fascinating account
This book is absolutely one of the best I've ever read. I consider it a privilege for Clarence Thomas to have shared his story with me and everyone else who has read it. I don't read political books; actually purchased it for my husband. I was intrigued by the title, started reading and couldn't put it down. By the end of the book, I had goose bumps and felt enlightened, sad and hopeful all at the same time--I will recommend this book to any and everyone...thank you to Clarence Thomas, an outstanding, uplifting American and human being.
