I am Catholic and I really like this book
I am Catholic, but for some reason I decided to purchase this book as part of my summer reading. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the message of this book and of Buddhism. I discovered a newfound respect for other religions. I will always be Catholic, but this is a book that both entertained me and expanded my mind. I was fascinated to read about the journey the
Buddha
took to reach
enlightenment
. I found familiarity. I found wisdom. I found strength and motivation. It helped for me to read this shortly after finishing "Change Your Thoughts..." by Dr. Wayne Dyer--a self help book with a spiritual twist--and "A Beautiful Bucket of Bones" by M. Luci--a fantastic novel about love, loss and faith--because it tied up all the motions those two other books stirred in me, and I achieved a sense of peace. It is a good feeling, and I hope other people are able to read these books and reach this sort of tranquility.

Excellent read!
This was a great book! Author Deepak Chopra, takes you on a wonderful enlightening journey along side the experiences of
Buddha
. If you are seeking to "study" the religion, this is not a study guide. This is a beautifully written
story
about the life a Buddha, and how he became to be Buddha.
Thought provoking
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Deepak Chopra is a fantastic
story
teller and really kept me engaged. I have read a little about
Buddha
before this book, but this book made me understand what his journey was all about. I have to say that it is not what I expected... the journey for
enlightenment
seemed so difficult and painful.

There are better options for studying Buddhism.
Chopra's best contribution to Buddhism in this book is his honest assessment of
Buddha
's non-God position. But then he goes on to write about Buddha's encounter with good & evil spirits, which of course parallels the theistic religions. Then he attributes miracles to the Buddha, which, like the miracles of Jesus, cannot be verified except for "a long, long time ago, someone said it happened." He also writes that our everyday experience with suffering is not "real," but rather, what you are experiencing is a "dream state." This is a New-Agey way of dealing with suffering. Buddha made the human experience of suffering the center piece of his analysis of the human condition. So therefore, suffering IS NOT just some figment of the human imagination. When the suicide bomb blows off your arms & legs, it's the real thing period. So if you're interested in the absolute power of non-metaphysical, knock your socks off, no frills, by golly I can do this
enlightenment
stuff too -- kind of Buddhism, then read "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki and "Siddhartha" by Hermann Hesse.
