s are something of an institution among birdwatchers. 'Remember that silver Mercedes that slid past you in the passing lane yesterday on the way home? Not too fast, certainly not slow. 'Just smooth as it gets and all class?
That's what the PFGs are to bird books.

(fifth edition) not only has the 'specs', the drawings, the maps, and the silhouettes that you need if you want to identify the birds that accompany us in the East and Midwest. It also comes decked out in a bullet-proof livery that means you're not going to wear it out quickly no matter how many times you thumb through it with one eye on the bird that just came to your feeder or meadow and one on the book.
You may want to find a mate for this PFG, which will likely be a bird book focused more specifically on your state or substate region. Nevertheless, Peterson is the place to start. Get some bird glasses, this book, and go get'em.

Excellent field guide; very easy to use
This edition is a great improvement upon previous editions. It has been updated to address taxonomic reclassifications, but most importantly, the organization of the book has been simplified. All species are now in color, and the illustrations are found near the written descriptions of each species. In addition, a mini-map is given next to the listing. These new features combine to make an outstanding

that I have found. I can actually say that this guide helped me to get more interested in birding.
My only complaint is that I think the text is at times a bit terse, and a bit of the text from previous editions has been removed--the biggest loss is the discussion of nests. At times, I wish there was more detailed discussion of habitat, especially when it would aid identification. Also, as an ecologist, I think a little more detailed discussion of the ecology of the species would be welcome. However, these complaints are small; I think this is the best field guide on the market, and its shortcomings can be easily compensated by other books and materials which explore each species in more depth instead of focusing on identification.

Birds Field Guide review
The pictures were what I was interested in. They are clear and very accurate. I would liked to have had more detail on the history of each bird but over all, it has helped me a great deal.
