Exhilarating

I grew up exposed to all "versions" of Dawkin's evolution by natural selection, be it from middle-school textbooks, or 'interpretation" from religious literature, my understanding of it was ... superficial, and my feeling towards it, lukewarm, at best.

Having read The Selfish Gene and The Blind Watchmaker back to back, that has changed. First of all, Dawkin's writing is wonderful. He could be writing about auto repairs (last subject I find interesting) and it probably will still be a good read. He reasons like no one else. Even if you were religious (therefore you believe "beyond reason' that God created everything), you've got to appreciate THE WAY he reasons: So methodical, so logical, so clear, therefore so easy to understand. If you are into debate, read his books. It is also witty, passionate & literary. Not dry at all. But most of all, he gave a simple, clear & complete interpretation of Darwin's theory, that would convince anyone who is open to 'reason' that indeed it is the only theory that can explain the adaptive complexity that has resulted in the diversity of life on earth.

What I love about this book is that he really conveys in his writing an evolutionary biologist's, sense of awe towards Darwin's elegant theory. I totally feel Dawkin's sense of wonder when I think about my eyes, my thumbs & my toes.

It is a Feel Good book.

ummm... don't be ignorant

That goes for ALL people who post reviews.

I can't say that I've read the book (nor do I inherently agree with the theory of evolution) but to those who would on either side spout stereotypes in ignorance: we REALLY don't want to read your opinion.

Those who have never read the book and give it no stars or a single star, should actually attempt to understand the concepts.
Those who give it five with an off-hand comment about "God" not existing (especially if you aren't Anglo-something) should probably study some theology and understand THOSE concepts (considering Jesus was from the Middle East, I don't think anyone REALLY thinks he was white).

Long live thought!

Informative easy reading

Personally, I have not decided one way or the other on the topic of evolution. While there is much to recommend it, I can imagine that other answers might fit the evidence, too. That said, I learned what the theory of evolution really is, rather than the poorly understood negative viewpoint I was used to getting. I had many misconceptions. Also, the writing was very entertaining. I enjoyed every minute of it. I would recommend this book to everyone. You don't have to believe it. However, as it is a prevalent concept in society today, it should at least be understood so that if you agree or disagree, you have an idea of what your talking about! ;-)

Bats who see in color and much more

While I did find myself feeling the sense of awe and intellectual stimulation that I get from good science writing in many of this books pages, it wasn't the instant page-turner of a book like 'The Selfish Gene'. In fact I read this book right after the aforementioned book. The Selfish Gene is a hard book to live up to. Having said that, some sections of this book give you that sense of awe at the biological world that Dr. Dawkins is so good at presenting. Reading passages of this book to some of my scientist, but sadly religious friends around the campfire, found them quite interested as well.
