AN ORIGINAL...AND STILL THE BEST!

This recording was made right after the show first opened on Broadway, and stars the original cast. Zero Mostel was and always will be Tevye. He was a great genius of the theater. The rest of the cast was funny and moving and true. This cd offers one great thing that no other can offer:the immediacy and thrill of the original opening night. Believe me, it's good.

This is a great musical!

Zero Mostel and Maria Karnilova are in their greatest roles! IF I WERE A RICH MAN and TRADITION are favorites, along with SUNRISE, SUNSET. This is a five-star musical and you need it!

A classic humorous play!

Zero Mostel's voice is just right for the songs in this show. This cast is better than any local revival! Plus there are many famous performers in this cast!

Doesn't deserve any shame, nor any great honor either.

This is run of the mill Fiddler on the Roof, and it is a decent production. However, I recently saw a local production which I thought is better than this. Which I profess could be a matter of musical taste. This production is more harsh and guttural than the average production, and given the material being portrayed is somewhat justified. However the few songs that I feel were meant to be softer and more sentimental(I.E. Sabbath Prayer and Sunrise, Sunset) are just blown to bits by Zero Mostel's braying. Golde(his wife) also has a shrill voice, and at points DO YOU LOVE ME can get painful to listen to. Also I concede that the rigors of Broadway make it nigh impossible to put teenagers in a long running show, but the "children" in this production sound much to old. At that point and time in that culture it would have been teenagers marrying out, and many of the actors and actresses just sound to old. Motel the tailor is marginal, Perchick the student sounds like a father. Chava the 3rd oldest is believable, Hodel the 2nd oldest is also marginal, and Tzeitel the oldest(still a teenager)--sounds like a 30 yr old woman and is in no way believable as 17,18,19 yr old. It may sound picky but listen to the songs and you'll agree its a real problem. The CD does have it's good points, THE DREAM and FAR FROM THE HOME I LOVE are two of the CD's redeeming points. The rest of the songs are just kind of average. The orcheastra is good but can't really make up for the singing. The included booklet is slim, and the CD ends at 50 min(awfully short for a 3hr production). So, if you're trying to get into Fiddler this is an ok CD, but for those who have heard better I would wait with me for a new adaptation and save your money for something like Les Mis or the Phantom.

the Fiddler is falling of The Roof!

This paticlar recording of Fiddler is a very mediocre one. Zero Mostel was probably very good at acting the role of Tevye, but he couldn't really do much more than,well,bark the songs out.Apparently Tevye's daughters inherited his unique singing talents, as proven in Matchmaker,but they don't send you writhing in pain or make your ears bleed or send every dog within a 5 mile radius charging at you. Perchik was good, and golde was Ok, but I probably would either;1, save your money and don't buy it;2,buy another version ( the movie one is good)
