Great intro to double edge safety razors

The Merkur HD is the best intro razor to those who have never used a double edge safety razor. Merkur took the old vintage Gillette and improved upon it by giving a slightly longer handle and a heftier handle. The adjustments are similar to that in a classic Gillette double edge.

After you get used to this razor, you should consider a Merkur Futur for an even closer shave. However, that razor is *not* intended for beginners.

Excellent Razor

I haven't used a double edge safety razor in 36 years. I switched to injector, then cartidge and finally disposable. Modern razors are still quite good, but if you want a change or get into vintage shaving, this is the best I've used dating back to the Sixties. Unlike my old safety razors, this one doesn't have a split head and have to pull the head off to change blades. I've never had problems taking long strokes and never nick myself, but I do recommend brush and soap cake (or tube cream) which I've always used (it really saves money no matter what the razor and last for months and months). Traditional safety razors are as close as you'll get to a barbershop straight razor, without the risk!

In conclusion the old-fashioned way, along with practice, often produces the best results. Today, we are often lured into convenience at the cost of quality.

As an update, January 12, 2008: Ordered 3 packages of blades with this razor,Merkur Double Edge Safety Razor Blades- 3 Packs of 10 Blades - 30 Blades in Total- Made in Germany, and still have two blades left! Shaving today never got so cheap! How many disposable razors would you have gone through in nearly 3 years?

Still learning...

I recently acquired this razor in the mail, and it looks and feels like it is built to outlast me. The only improvement on the design I would make is a longer handle, and Merkur has done that with other razors. The blades are very easy to change.

The other reviewers are right in that it will take a while to shave without all the nicks and cuts. However, this razor provides a much closer shave than the Schick Quattro that I used to use.

If you're looking for a really close shave, I recommend this razor, but don't forget about the learning curve that comes with it.

Good to start out on

This is the first "Safety Razor" I've used. Although this type of razor does have a learning curve, after a few shaves you get the hang of it. I was impressed with the build quality of the razor. Hefty, it feels solid in your hand. With the textured handle I never felt like I was going to slip. Gave a very close shave. Easily menuverable and decent balance. Very good value considering the craftsmanship involved. Not as intuitive as a modern razor, it's something different and helps build good shaving habits.
