Poor Picked Upon Wodney Becomes the Class Hero!

As an elementary school librarian, I like promoting books in which a child's disability actually turns into a gift. Here poor picked-upon Wodney, who hides his head inside his jacket at recess, becomes the hero of his class by inadvertently driving the new bully away.

This story reminds me of "Gerald McBoing Boing," by Dr. Seuss, which is about a boy who can't talk, but only makes sounds.

Wodney Wat is sure to encourge many kids, with or without disabilities, for many years to come!

Hooray for Rodney

Poor Rodney, he can not pronounce his "r's". When they played Simon says he made Camilla Capybarra go away.
I am glad Rodney is a hero. Hooray for Rodney Rat.
I like this book because it is funny and makes me feel good inside.

Hilarious

This book is hilarious. A friend bought it for my 4 year old and it's become our favorite book to read (she now reads it to me from memory). I bought it for my nephews birthday and now I want to buy it for all the kids in my life. I like the fact that in the end the little, shy guy who everybody teased and made fun of becomes the hero. It cracks me up everytime we read it, plus it has a moral. Some kid books are so boring for the parent to read, but this one is really fun (especially if you do voices with the characters).

diversity and tolerance

Poor Wodney. Imagine being a Rat..a Rodent...named Rodney...and you can't pronounce your "r's". How many young children still remember struggling through those r's and w's? Add to the mix a bully who is not only a girl but dressed in pink ruffles. O.K., she's bigger, smarter, and meaner than any of the other rodents. Shy Rodney saves the day and the others learn to accept that people and rodents may have worth even if they are different.

charming story

This is just really sweet and funny. Sure, it teaches a lesson, but it's never heavyhanded or moralistic about it. The story and the engaging characters are what stand out, and the main character's speech impediment makes it fun to read out loud to a child.
