Not the gold standard - but the best value for money

This is the best atlas you can get in this price category. The gold standard of world atlases - The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World - will cost you three times as much as this one.

The features of the Oxford University Press's "Atlas of the World" are quite similar to the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World. It has the same user-friendly overview over the maps contained in the atlas ("Key to the World/European Map Pages") on the insides of the front and back hardcover. And it has the same comprehensive index of names in the back, featuring not only the location of a certain place on the grid of a map, but also the place's longitude and latitude. As a bonus, there are 16 pages with stunning satellite pictures of - among others - cities like Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Sydney and Naples with Mount Vesuvius.

The main difference is the size of the two atlases: The Times Atlas is 19 by 13.3 inches, the Oxford Atlas is 15 by 11.3 inches. The bigger-sized maps of the Times Atlas allow greater detail.

If you still have small kids in the house who love to thumb through your books, this atlas will be your best choice. In its price category it is absolutely a 5-star book.

Atlas of the World, 12th Edition

This atlas is great! It has clear maps of all regions and countries of the world. It does not only focus on the economically advanced countries, but also on less advanced ones. I was thrilled to read the overviews of the countries and learn their flags. So far, this atlas has been very useful and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have an atlas on the shelf for reference.

Bigger than you think

Being the first major atlas purchase I have made, I underestimated the size of the book - of course, paying so much for an atlas, you would think I would expect such a huge slab. The first section is a bunch of beautiful full-page photos of different places on the planet. It is followed by tons of two-page spreads about everything from the universe to climate to various conflicts. It is then followed by maps of various large cities, and finally the detailed maps themselves. The maps can get a little redundant, but the various magnification levels allow you to see an area with different levels of detail. Of course the United States isn't as detailed as an atlas dedicated to the United States, but that's almost to be expected. It can get a little annoying when you're trying to look at an area that falls on the edge of a map and is barely shown on the adjacent map, but overall it is a great resource.

A Very Satisfactory Choice

Few will be disappointed when this book arrives. It does its job well, has very current information, and strives to expand the reader's horizon about the pale blue dot on which we live.

Pros: Very thorough, large beefy volume, up-to-date info.
Cons: Ink color is very good but it doesn't quite visually jump off the page at you. Color contrast could be improved.

Do I recommend this product?: Yes

Atlas of the World, 12 Edition

The presentation, and paper are really good, for this a give a 100%
I liked the topics, that the book explores. However, some of them are not very realistic, because are not updated, or fictitious, for example it says in there that Mexico has a political unrest, and the truth is that a very small fraction of Chiapas, one out of 32 states of Mexico has problems, like many countries in the world have, and they dont have that piece of information.
