Just the Right Dosage!
The
Lovin
'
Spoonful
was and will remain a strong musical influence. While I never thought of them as America's answer to the Beatles -- (the Beatles were a nonpareil group in a class by themselves), the Lovin' Spoonful were a musical juggernaut in their own right. They led the forefront and paved the way for more folk rockers and their music is truly timeless. Their work is a portrait of a different side of the mid-to-late sixties and has influenced many other artists, including Joe Cocker. It was a banner day in Rock History when the Spoonful were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! About time!
John Sebastian, the founder of the group is truly an exceptionally talented man. A gifted lyricist and musician, his soothing vocals and gentle strumming make for a very pleasant listening experience indeed.
This CD is what Lovin' Spoonful fans and other folk rock afficionados have been praying for. Sadly, the group had a relatively short stint in the Rock & Roll sun, but their work will never be forgotten. Luckily, this collection exists to contain their
hits
. Be sure to add this to your collection.

Great CD
The
Lovin

Spoonful
's career was short-lived, and their albums were spotty. But as a singles band, they were amonng the very best. Do You Believe in Magic, Daydream, Summer in the City, Younger Girl, You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, Didn't Want to Have to Do, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind, Darling Be Home Soon, Six O'Clock and Rain on the Roof are genuine classics. Happy, not sappy, is the word to describe the Lovin Spoonful. This so-called "innocence" of another day and age will bring a smile to your face, not a groan from the pit of your stomach. Just try not to smile while listening to Daydream or You Didn't Have to Be So Nice. It's almost impossible.

Feelgood pop on great-value CD
The
Lovin

Spoonful
had a brief but glorious career in the second half of the sixties, as part of America's answer to the Beatles. In those respects they were much like the Turtles and, like them, their reputation has since faded somewhat. Induction into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame has done much to rectify that.
John Sebastian was the heart of the group. As songwriter, he is often reminiscent of Ray Davies on a bad day; uninspiring lyrics and simplistic tunes, and the group's musicianship and singing were adequate but not great. Yet they produced two authentic classics -- Daydream and Summer in the City -- and a slew of other, worthwhile songs. When they stayed closer to traditional roots, as in Jug Band Music, they were great. But mostly, they chose to be more commercial than the Monkees.
This CD is great value. Because they had such a short career, it has been possible to include all their
hits
, plus more, on this 26-track album. The sound quality is superb and the sleeve notes good. So if you want just one Spoonful, take this one.

Time Capsule
Would've loved something good live. Never-the-less, this short lived John Sebastian band holds many first and onlys. A listen warps one back to the mid 1960s, when there was little to feel good about. The
Lovin
'
Spoonful
was one of them. Sebastian, incredibly talented, paints the hope and prayers of the 60s-cum-70s like no one else. SUMMER IN THE CITY splendors with a feeling, rather than an oblique message. The songs made reference to the sexual revolution taking place at the time, the need to seperate ourselves from the horrors abroad, and to remind us of Magic. John Sebastian progressed to a career that included TV ad jingles, and theme song/music to a popular 70s program WELCOME BACK KOTTER (which was so popular, a theatrical version was done); and in no small measure, the music helped realize the film. But one song in particular holds the distinction, IMHO, of being the best - and perhaps only - of it's kind: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?, contains actual magic. Wanna bet?
