Surprisingly good

I became a huge film noir fan after seeing "Laura", the first in the Fox Film Noir series. Since then I've picked up all the new releases in this series religiously. I haven't been disappointed a single time. This one really surprised me. I thought I'd have trouble seeing Lucille Ball as anybody but 'Lucy' but she surprised me. I loved the plot of this movie, I thought it was one of the best film noir plots I've seen. Private eye film noirs are my favorite, and I loved the way this starts as a mystery, then slowly reveals itself as it progresses. I know it's not considered a great film noir, but I thought it was great. Some movies, no matter what other people thought of it, hit you just right. This one did.

TOUGH NOIR-CRIME DRAMA...

Hard luck private-eye Brad Galt (Mark Stevens) is having a rough time starting over in New York after a bum rap in San Francisco. He's being tailed by a cop and a mysterious man in a white suit (William Bendix). Luckily for him, his smart secretary Kathleen (Lucille Ball) pitches in to help unravel the mystery and when a murder complicates things, her loyalty really comes in handy. Things go from bad to worse for Brad ...especially when he's framed for the murder and White Suit turns up dead. Clifton Webb co-stars as a wealthy art gallery owner who's obsessed with his beautiful, younger un-faithful wife and he's elegantly sinister as usual. All in all, "Dark Corner" is a good noir mystery and the DVD print is fine if a tad dark. Stevens is a typical hard-boiled, battered about detective and Ball is fine as Kathleen. Some have commented on her performance here as not up to her usual standard. I found that she gave what the character (and director) warranted despite whatever hardship she was under at the time. There was no opportunity for her to really shine although she managed to a few times. Stevens, Bendix and Webb mostly carried the film with their tough performances. Ball wasn't the focus here as she was in, say, "Lured" or some of her other 40's films. Kathleen was just a loyal, resourceful secretary who happened to fall in love with her boss. Still, Ball was an always watchable actress and she's on screen enough and watchable here in "Dark Corner". Enjoy.

First Rate Noir

Those apprehensive about Lucille Ball in a film noir never fear. The First Lady of Comedy aquits herself remarkably well as the devoted secretary of a tough-talking gumshoe(Mark Stevens) being set up for a murder rap. Also excellent are William Bendix as a mysterious man in the white suit tailing Stevens and Clifton Webb as the art dealer with the young trophy wife. The audience gets caught up in the byzantine plot strands along with Stevens and a helpful Ball as they try to unearth the frame-up. Adding to the tension are great black-and-white cinematography and terrific New York atmosphere circa 1946. Terrific tongue-in-cheek pulp dialogue is also a plus. Look quick for Ellen Corby(Grandma on "The Waltons") as a cleaning woman.

great cast

I liked this movie. First of all it is a great oldie. Black & White & the cast was wonderful. Clifton Webb makes the best bad guy. & William Bendix also makes a good bad guy. Lucy was a little out of it like the other email said but she was still good. And I loved the ending. Great pay back
