not just for parenting
The message in
ScreamFree
Parenting
is universal and the principles of self-control most certainly can be practiced by all of us in all our relationships. This book is well organized and well written, using humor to illustrate serious ideas. Great book; looking for the next one with great anticipation.
not just about not screaming
I found this book to be very helpful. I saw a TV interview of the author and decided to buy the book because of that. The book is really not just about how not to scream, though; it's a comprehensive guide for adults to have self-control. Rather than place the control of the family in the hands of young children, the author advocates that adults first learn how to take care of their own behavior, and from that solid standpoint then discipline their children. Ultimately, he points out, you really can't control the decisions of
your
children, and trying to do so will leave you both miserable. The real goal is to raise them in such a way that they will be able to make good decisions of their own free will. I found this book to be helpful not only with
kids
but also with other people.
It really isn't a self-help book, but more of a book that introduces concepts which make sense but which I hadn't thought of before, such as respecting another person's choices. Instead of being obsessed with a child's choices, it is important for adults to maintain control over their own choices. It sounds simple, but I recommend reading this book to get the full concept.

Amazing book
It's not just for those who raise their voice. This book is simply amazing - to the point, and hits those nuances I think I'm aware of, but lose sight of in the heat of the moment. I'm looking forward to becoming a much calmer parent after reading this, and ultimately having a better time
parenting
. (and not having my 3 yr old daughter telling me to "Calm down!" - ouch)
I just finished the book yesterday, and wanted to add- I wish the author had another book for
screamfree
relating with other members of the family and friends (although much of the screamfree parenting book can also be applied to that). I think it would even be helpful for those without
kids
- it helped me see how I "scream" in my other relationships, and how I need to take better care of myself. If I calm down, not react, and change my part in the patterns in my relationships, the patterns can improve. (as we all know, we really can't change others, and we shouldn't want to - that's their right!) Read this book! It has great real-life examples too.

Helping me become the type of mom I want to be
Saw Hal on The Today Show and then attended a seminar of his a couple of days later (found his schedule at his website). I wear the bracelet (see "
screamfree
.com") that I got at the seminar as a daily reminder to keep my
cool
. As silly as it sounds, it works and I'm becoming the type of mom that I've wanted to be -- no longer giving in to the stress and
raising
my voice when my pre-schooler raises his.
If you feel you give into the stresses of life and aren't being the type of parent you always wanted to be, I highly recommend reading the book and attending a seminar. Thanks, Hal!!!!

Great book!
This is a fantastic, thoughtful book. I read it in one sitting and was amazed at how relevant it is to my own life. The only thing
keeping
me from rating it a 5 was that I found myself several times asking "how" and wanting more examples or strategies to use than were presented. When one has spent a lifetime being "ScreamFilled" it can be hard to imagine how to become "
ScreamFree
." Still, the ideas Runkel talks about are powerful and thought-provoking, and I look forward to putting them into practice.
